I like it.
It makes a connection (for me) into a small part of the creative process.
Hope that makes sense, I don't know if it does.
Nice hands too.

I really like the image, Scott.
Two very minor points:
Because the main subjects are the hands, pencil and sketch pad, I'd like it better if the jeans weren't in such good focus (I do know why they are- plane of focus, etc.). The patterns of the cloth show up a bit too sharp IMO.
The second is strictly a personal observation. Long ago, holding a pen or pencil correctly was taught in school. I've noticed in photographs and on TV that- for quite a long time now- people hold pens and pencils as though they were small clubs. To me, it looks like writing (or sketching) with fists, not fingers . I can only wonder what differences that makes.

Well done.
Cheers Ray
I almost did feel like I was intruding.
Backstory: Taken on a composition intensive workshop in Savannah in October. Our assignment was to produce 4 images, shooting high to low, low to high, low to low, and an extremely close portrait. While we were allowed to produce a color image, we all had our cameras set to preview in BW to add visualization of elements free of color.
I didnt know what I was going to take, but came upon a half dozen or more students with sketch pads on their own assignment. And they were more than tolerant of my wish to take some very close in shots. This one was taken about 6-8 inches from the young man's head. He continued on with his work. I guess they have all taken turns posing for each other, so he was OK with this.
The image was my "high to low" entry.

Thanks for the detailed observations, Charlie. I can see how the detail of the jeans could end up a distraction.
