Thanks guys.
I'm not sure how widespread marmots are but I've seen them in the Rockies and as far north as mid-Alaska. They tend to live in rocky mountainous areas, especially where there are numerous loose rocks for them to hide in and for winter's hibernation.
Marmot's bodies are about one foot long and the animals are very fat, so they don't stray far from the safety of their rocky slopes.

I got a shot of one this fall. Huge rodents. My images was taken from as close as I could get to it, and it was tiny in the shot, so well done to get this close Charlie.

Again, thanks gentlemen.
Tim's mentioning that I may not have been close enough to make it whistle is playing along with my little word gag- the "whistling marmots" give a loud warning call when they sense danger. The call sounds like a whistle.
