It also included a CD and warranty card. I didn't notice a printed user manual however unlike my old UV date code 85mm lens. Is this the norm now? The manual is in the included CD instead?
My 85L2 didn't come with a CD. I guess it came with a manual; while I am one who usually reads manuals, I don't think I ever looked at a manual for a lens. Curious what's inside
Dunno about that lens but I have got CD's in the last 2 lenses.... I guess a move away from paper... I would like to tell you what was on the CD but well... I didn't open it cause I just don't read manuals
Just curious what they are thinking - that would have to be a mini-CD, and I am not so sure how many people actually have a computer to read that thing these days (only desktops have tray loaders, people have more and more laptops and iPads, and you can't put a mini CD into a slot loader).

Why would it have to be a mini CD?

Slot loaders ISN'T restricted to desktop computers. Plenty of laptops are equipped with trays.
I just received several lenses that included full-size CD's. I think they are a waste. 1) aside from maybe a super-tele or TS-E, why in the world would you need a manual for a lens and 2) if they're going to include a CD, the assumption is there will be a computer involved. Which means they could just bypass the CD entirely and direct users to a .pdf library on the website.
I'm not a greenie, but a useless CD is just as wasteful as a useless booklet.
Providing a CD is probably cheaper then providing a printed manual. I bet some people will cry when they deliver the lens without a manual at all. If only because they think resale value will degrade.
