p.1 #1 · IR lens - Got a clue?

Well I converted an old T2i into an IR body and then picked up the Tam. 17 - 50 VC. Not much info out there on good lenses. This one has the dreaded white spot syndrome that a lot of lens seem to have. I know the 17 - 40 is suppose to be good for IR but I already own the 16 - 35 ( which is terrible ) and hate to double up quite that much. I am looking for something in this price range ($600 - 800 ) which could cover a wide to tele. that would work well for this camera. Any ideas of compatible good lenses for IR? I know this is not the best place to pose this ?, but I haven't figured out a better place yet. Rick

From testing I did a couple of year ago with various lenses. (715 is likely what you converted your camera to)

Contax-Yashica (CY) 35-70 F3.4 is superb for IR...and the 17-40 is wonderful as well

The Nikon 14-24 F2.8 is great in IR (have to use an adapter).

BurningHeart's list is the best reference for Canon.

You might want to try and find a 28-70mm f3.5-4.5 II. I used one when I was messing with IR a few years ago. It doesn't have a white spot and actually has an IR focusing scale to correct for focusing differences. You should be able to find one for less than $100. It wouldn't solve your tele needs, but may cover your wide angle needs.

Voigtlander SLII 20mm f3.5 colour skopar is very good at ir, no hotspots.
It's also a pretty damn good wide prime in pancake form.

I am using a bunch of lenses for IR photos. I made some bad experience with the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 EX DC HSM and Canon 24-70 f2.8 L. Both lenses created a visible hot spot even at wider open aperture settings. Best lens for IR in the wide angle range IMO is the Canon 17-40 f4 L. The Canon 135 f2 L prime lens works fine, too.

I use a regular 18-55IS with my converted rebel XT with very nice results. No hot spots, get very sharp results, its lightweight and I can throw the rebel and lens in the bag even when I am not going shooting IR in particular. Regular autofocus works fine, too, no need to compensate for IR distances.
