What is the general consensus on the EF 100/2 ?
Pretty darn good lens?

I'm not a Ken Rockwell devotee, but I just read his review, and it was very positive, and he didn't joke around or talk sarcastically at all in it as he often does. He just said it was a really good lens and gave some solid reasons why.

It's my top choice at the moment for my very first EF lens.
I've been shooting Nikon since 2000, and now that I have a full Nikon setup, I'm looking to start a small Canon system. I have an EOS A2 body that I can't really use until I get a lens. in fact, I only used it once so far a couple of years ago, with a friend's 17-40 L, 50/1.8, and 70-200 L IS lenses. So I'd be shooting this lens strictly on film (mostly b&w and color neg) for the time being.

This would be my only EF lens for a while. 100mm is one of my favorite focal lengths, and I don't actually have a 105mm Nikkor lens.

I have a current nearby friend who uses Canon, but doesn't have any fast primes, but has a 70-200 L. So maybe I can convince we can share lenses during shooting outings.

Thanks. Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays.

I liked my quite a bit, and used it on everything from a 30D to a 5D...Produced great results, and focused accurately and quickly. I can't say how it might do on film, but I can't imagine it would fail there. It's fairly economical and if you don't like it, can be peddled here on the board for probably what you buy it for...

Just my $.02 though...

It is a very good lens at a very good price. I got mine for $300, used.
It gives 80-90% of the performance of the EF135/2L (granted, at a shorter
focal length) at less than half the price.

Nice and compact as well.

It's a wonderful lens, great for portraiture, but it is one of those "un-Canon-like" lenses in terms of colour rendition and contrast. I like it very much, but the truth is a lot of people prefer glass with a better Canon like look. The already mentioned 135L, but also the 100mm alternative a 100 macro have much more saturated colours and a steeper contrast. The 100mm macro is extremely good in micro contrast, but at the same time that's a characteristic that makes the lens harsh for many situations. Since you say this is gonna be your one and only EF lens for a while I would suggest you do a good research on which lens and characteristics you'll like the best. Canon has some great zoomlenses that include the 100 mm FL as well, a TSE90 that's close and actually there is a hardly a system like Canon's that offers you more choice for a 100 mm solution with all kinds of different characteristics. From all those lenses I am almost sure the 100/2.0 has the lowest selling numbers and that is for a reason. If you want a perfect portrait lens, you can't go wrong, but if you have other applications as well, first do some research. Well I hope you are gonna have EOSfun with your new Canon system!

Somehow I managed to get one of these for £25, very pleased with it. So far used indoors with my kids nativity at the local church. worked a treat.

Is it more of a Nikkor look?
No issue with that.

As I recall, Chris Sorensen, who used to post somewhat often on the People board
used a 5D with the 100 f/2 primarily in this fashion photography.

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/703194/

He got great results.

^ Very impressive. Although it is an f2 lens the bokeh isn't as nice as the 135. I know it's half the price and all just saying

It's a phenomenal lens. One outstanding aspect of that lens is there is zero distortion. It's the perfect portrait lens.

Of all the factors that might go into your decision, the "Canon-like" or "un-Canon-like" business is very close to if not at the bottom of the list. Important factors might include:

1. Price
2. The extent to which you photography does or does not benefit from larger apertures.
3. Whether or not IS is important in your photography with such a lens.
4. The importance or not of macro capability at 100mm.
5. How the capabilities of the lens fit in with those of your other lenses.

Isnt the 100/2 just a stretched 85/1.8 anyhow? there almost identical in all optical terms.

I like mine too. I think it is one of Canon's best "bang for the buck" lenses. It is very sharp and the AF is quick and accurate. It does have slight color fringing at the edges when wide open but you really have to pixel peep to see it..

Rob,
Yes. It is basically identical to the 85.

This is a wide open shot with a 1DMkII at ISO3200 in a very dim local Jazz club.

I'd disagree, the contrast on the 85mm is a lot harsher.

One of my favorite non-L Canon portrait lenses. My only gripe was the inconsistent AF (on my copy anyway). Pros: price, weight/size, IQ, f/2 @ 100mm.
