Back in 2008, Lloyd Chambers tested the 70-200 v.1 on an FX body and published the results in an essay entitled, "Mush in the Corners". All you need to know if you don't have a subscription:

This is my no 1 complaint with this lens, you end up shoot headshots at 140mm or something.
slightly is a matter of opinion. VR1 unusable for me even without vignetting because of corner softness that never goes away no matter what aperture. VR2 has funky bokeh near wide open. bad swirlies make it look like you are looking through a tunnel if you have a busy background. you need to stop down to about f5.6 to get reduce enough so that it's not distracting. at least it is sharp across the frame from abotu f4 onwards.
