So, I'm just a little ignorant on my filters. Usually when I've gotten a lens I've managed to get a filter with it.
I recently purchased a new 24 1.4L II and I need to get a filter for it
I bought a cheap one that was terrible. Bad bad bad all around.
What's good for protection? Budget isn't too much of an issue if I only need to get it once
Anything I should look for specifically? And anything to avoid?
I normally don't use protection filters, except when I'm in a hostile environment with blowing sand, salt water spary, and similar threats. In these circumstances, I use B+W MRC UV-haze 010M and B+W MRC #007 Protection Clear filters. I have far fewer protection filters than lenses.
The Nikon NC filters are just the ticket, multi-coated clear filter and well made. However, don't get fooled into thinking a filter will protect the front element, the lens hood does way more than a filter ever could in the protection department. So your mantra should be, attach the hood, attach the hood.
I find a hood works as well as a filter on normal days. Im too skeptical of filters interfering with picture quality.
However, I did purchase a Cokin Holder system with a GND, CPL, and ND filters.
If I don't need a filter, my lens is bare.
the term "hostile environment" can cover a whole lotta situations. since i do work in just those variables its on and remains on unless something dictates its needed removal. i haven't really found one yet during use.

+1 On B+W (Have on all my lenses that can take filters)

Thanks! That helps a little...
Anyone else have some input?

The ONLY time the front element of one of my lenses was damaged, it was because a filter broke and scratched up my lens. I don't use filters except in very extreme conditions. I think they're just as apt to cause serious damage as not. For protection? I use the lenscap. It's tough enough to stop a pellet from a pellet rifle. I also use lenshoods every time. They deflect a lot of crap. I've also had a number of important shots ruined (flare, ghosting) because I had a stupid filter on. I threw them away.
I also like B+W filters. I might slightly favor Hoya's Super HMC and Pro-1 series. I haven't tried their new HD series, but they look great. Basically, for me it's Hoya and B+W.
Whenever possible, I don't use a filter, but always try to use a lens hood in that case. For cheaper lenses, under $500, I don't worry much about damage.
