Very informative, and very clearly written. Although I was aware of the causes of sample variation, to see such a large amount of real data is illuminating (no pun intended).

Enjoyed the article. Having been a quality engineer, I am quite aware of tolerance stack-up. Of course, part of my job was to ensure the stack-up would not compromise the requirements or standards for the component, subsystem or system. I would think camera manufactures do the same. The question is what is the standard for sharpness stack-up for any given camera "system" (camera, lens combination)? I am sure they have a requirement for this and is verified and validated prior to final acceptance.
