p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · HELP: Narrow Focus on Nikon 105mm 2.8

Hi, I am a newbie who found a good condition Nikon 105mm 2.8 AF for macro work. My question though, is why am I getting a VERY narrow sliver (horizontal) of in-focus subject when shooting macro? For example when I shoot a lens cap, only the "Nikon" logo will be in focus horizontally and everything else is blurred.

Is it an aperture issue or me? javascript:void(0);

I will dig up an example if need be... but I am guessing this is maybe a quick fix.javascript:void(0);

Macro shooting around 1:1 will give you a fairly narrow depth of field (DOF).
Try shooting with an aperture indicated at F22 on the Nikon body - obviously you need good light to do this at 1:1.
I am assuming that if the lens was not stopping down to the selected aperture, you would get an error indicated on the camera.

Also look for angles that will make the most of what little depth you have (often referred to as "magic angles").

Too add to the good info from Brian and John, and to confuse you a bit
Keep in mind Nikon bodies shows apparent not actual aperture. At full lens extension the aperture reading will show 2 stops smaller than it actually is. So when the Canon guys see f/11 in their display, us Nikon guys will see f/22 at full extension.

Depending on what your shooting, you might find diffraction to be acceptable all the way down to f/32 or more if you need the depth of field.

I didn't think of that! I now know why the aperture reading changes when focusing way out...

Man so much to learn!

Thanks, that was very helpful.
