Please excuse my question but since I'm new to Canon is this lens the style before the new 'white' lenses or is this a completely different lens group

All L-lens primes under 300 mm, with the exception of the discontinued 200 mm f/1.8L and newly announced 200 mm f/2.0L IS are black.

less you forget 100-400, 70-200, 35-350.....

GLWS - this is a great lens. It's compact and light enough to walk around with for extended periods of time. I own one of these and it works beautifully with my 7D.
