My opinion is that Canon and Nikon will step up to the plate here. I do however think it will take them quite a while until they "catch up" to some of the other manufacturers in this niche market. When they do, it won't surprise me at all if they quickly overtake the likes of Sony, etc. Canon and Nikon will not just fade away - no way. Just a matter of time (hopefully) until we see a good mirrorless option... Like a FF digital FE2!
This "niche" market is already 40% of the exchangeable lens camera market in Japan. If they are going to catch up, they'd better do it fast. It must be said though, that for the average camera user, the Nikon solution may be just as useable as m4/3 or NEX. Most people tend to prefer infinite DOF, and I'm sure there's a very good sensor in that little, black box. And as for lenses, most lenses sold are zoom lenses with f-stops ranging from 3.5-5.6. Compared to that, 2.8 is almost blazingly fast
FF mirrorless? It might happen, but don't expect tiny lenses. Most of the lenses for NEX are already rather huge.
