p.1 #1 · Sold: Best Fisheye Zeiss 16mm f2.8 Distagon

Considered by many to be the best fisheye lens ever made, the Zeiss 16mm f2.8 Distagon full frame fisheye is a legend. Zeiss produced these at their Oberkochen plant in Germany in both the Rollei mount and Contax mount. The only difference being the proprietary HTF coating and T* coatings applied on the different lenses and the mounts/lens body. This is the Rollei version in their QMB mount, it has built in interchangeable filters as well.

Physically the lens is in excellent shape with some wear on the metal lens body, minor cleaning marks that are hardly noticeable on the the front element and minimal internal dust. Focusing is buttery smooth and aperture blades are snappy and dry with no oil. Internally other than a few dust specs there is no haze or fungus.

Probably the most important thing to note is that this specific copy that I am selling is razor sharp and a stunning optic and I have plenty of example photos shot with it to demonstrate that. I’ve been using it as an ultra-wide on my crop EOS bodies with outstanding results. For full framers, its important to note that the rear of the lens is pretty flat without any fins like the Contax version.

Rollei/EOS adapters are the thinnest EOS adapter ever made and because of this I had a real issue achieving infinity focus with this lens using a variety of generic adapters. I finally had to bite the bullet and buy the Kindai/cameraquest adapter for $180. Not only is this the finest adapter ever made, but because of the precise tolerances involved, Kindai does not even make it any more, making it extremely rare and hard to find. Using the lens on a Sony NEX body or M43 body with a generic adapter should not be an issue as their Rollei adapters are a lot thicker, hence easier to manufacture and readily available.

Every lens has good and bad copies, this specific copy is outstanding and here are some of my images shot with this lens on EOS 20D and XSi bodies to illustrate:

Examples:

If you are going to shoot panoramics, why not get the best. Here is a full 360 degree pano that I shot with this lens, XSi body and Nodal Ninja 3 MK II pano head. It’s simply stunning. Be sure to click on the full screen icon in the lower right hand side of the screen and then zoom in to see the level of details this lens is resolving at 100% magnification.
