p.1 #1 · adapting lighting stand to hold background?

Is there an adapter available that I could fit to two standard lighting stands which would then enable me to fit a rod to, which in turn could hold a background roll of paper? Have looked on the net and found nothing, and really thought it would be a simple thing to find!!!

Yep, it comes in a big roll and it's black and sticky.

More seriously and less jury-rigged, there are a wide variety of background crossbars that fit painlessly to standard light stands. Probably one of the better known and more widely available ones is made by Manfrotto; the part number is 2983, and it telescopes from roughly 4 feet to 9 feet in width. Fairly inexpensive as well.

Why do you even need a rod for background paper? Two Expans on Manfrotto 081 baby hooks is all what's needed to hold a roll.

It depends on just how low-fi you want your solution to be.

When I started out I used two spring clamps on the stops of my light stands - the grips formed a vertical V. I put the roll paper on a mop handle and placed it in the V. Worked perfectly.

Cost:
- $3 for large spring clamps
- Mope handle was free and multipurpose

At a later date I bought some 1" or 1.5" PVC pipe and drilled a single hole at each end, the hole fit over the light stand top but since it did not come through the second wall of the PVC at was captured at the top.

Cost:
- about $3

I think I did that because my wife was annoyed with my endless use of the mop for things other than mopping.

Finally, I bought the large background stand kit from Calumet when they were having a sale.

BTW, I still have the PVC pipe and have used it when I do not want to bother with the background stand kit.

Most crossbars are three-section collapsible pieces with a hole at either end. The top of your light stand should fit into the hole nicely. If it does not, a Manfrotto adapter often solves the problem.

If all you want to hold is a piece of aluminum pipe or similar, just get a SuperClamp.

Make sure you are using decently heavy duty stands. I tried using relatively light weight ones and saw that it was an accident waiting to happen - I ended up buying a kit with two big heavy duty stands and crossbar in a carry bag. A much safer solution.

How does a roll of paper attach to these things without a rod?

The Manfrotto Expan roll holder fits into the forks. Simple as that
The Super Clamps Ellis mentioned or Manfrotto Sky Hook are also an option, of course.

Take a look at the product image
here. The portion of the Expan drive insert which goes into the paper's core (works with PVC pipe too) should be apparent.
