I have a 550ex for sale. I was using this unit and the flash stopped working. The menu's and everything seem to work fine but when it comes time for it to flash nothing happens. This flash would be the perfect companion for someone wanting an external flash that may be a little better inclined to electronics than I am. I have replaced this unit with a 580ex unit so it's been sitting around..

Just to reiterate and avoid redundant PM's, emails, etc: I cannot get this flash to fire when it is supposed to. I have 5 Canon cameras and they all do not fire the flash, so it's not the camera. Making it master / slave by moving the slider on the rear panel does not help. I don't know what's going on here. This flash probably needs to be repaired. I'm not an electronics gadget person.
When you put batteries in the unit, the buttons work fine, and all buttons react the way they're supposed to, but the unit just won't flash. When I turn the unit on I can hear the unit firing up like it's going for a flash, but no release of light.
