Re: May I say that I miss my 5D MK 4

My older DSLRs do not eat much. Not only do I still have my 5D Mark IV cameras, bought in 2018 and 2024, I still have my 40D, which I bought pre-owned, in October 2010, soon after realizing that the Digital Rebel CTi/400D was too small for my hands, and that I preferred the “semi-pro” controls/buttons. I still have my first 7D, too, which was my first DSLR camera bought new, rather than pre-owned.

The borrowed, “household” XTi with which I started, was passed to my sister-in-law. A second XTi, which I had bought pre-owned, in order to have a “pair,” was traded at a local camera store. My major reason for starting to use DSLRs was for crime scene photography, while on duty, therefore the desire for the second camera body. In 2014, when I upgraded to a pair of the 7D Mark II, I traded one of my 7D cameras for store credit. Lenses, on the other hand, have tended to get traded, if unused for extended periods of time. Many of my lenses were bought pre-owned, so, could be traded or sold with minimal loss.

Hurricane Harvey, in 2017, did put some flood water into our house. Things stored in boxes, at floor level, were damaged. My Canon EOS M3 met its fate, this way. Nikon casualties included a D1x, D700, Df, and Coolpix A. Thankfully, all or most of my lenses, and my other cameras, were stored higher than floor level. My working pair of 7D Mark II cameras were with me, on duty, in a Pelican Case 1510. So, when I retired in 2018, my “primary team” of 7D II and 5Ds R cameras, and “reserve” 7D, remained intact.

I almost skipped the 5D Mark IV, not buying my first one until March 2018, after I had already bought my first Nikon D5. I no longer recall the major reason(s) I decided to add a 5D IV. Maybe it was an exceptionally low promotional price. Maybe it was to have the convenience of internal GPS, which the 5Ds R and Nikon D5 did not have. I had internal GPS in my 7D Mark II cameras, but even the 5Ds R had noticeably better AF than the 7D II, so, the 5D IV would offer better AF and internal GPS in one package.

Total Canon DSLRs still with me: 40D, 7D, 1D Mark II N, 5D, 5Ds R, 5D IV, 1Ds Mark III, and the second 5D IV, in order of acquisition. The pre-owned 1Ds Mark III was acquired so late, in 2018, as a simple emotional addition, for about $800, because it had been the top-tier, holy grail, $8K EOS EF camera, when I first started using modest APS-C Canon DSLRs.
