It's gotten much better over the last couple months. Radeon's are widely available and some NVidia cards are finally starting to reach sane prices.
For the price of a usable M1 config (ie a 32GB Max with 2TB disk), you can realistically expect to get a 3080 or 6900XT and 64GB of RAM, and have some cash left over
