It is not appearing on my monitors, nothing that would be classified as banding. I see a little noise but it won't be there when you print it, 100% guarantee.
Well I've never upgraded my firmware on my 7D, I think it's still at 1.1.1, and I've never even heard of or seen this highlight banding issue you speak of.
I highly doubt it's a problem among many of the bodies out there.
I do kinda sorta see it on two of those 100% crops, but damn... it's far from obvious. It does seem more like just noise from a really high density APS-C sensor, though.
I agree. It's way cheaper than any 1D. Solid for the price, and really a great camera. FPS is great. Auto focus is great. Has video.
In all practicality, who is going to print a full size raw to the same resolution as a 100% crop similar to above? If so, then a full frame 5D or 1Ds is the way to go. Either way, it's been said and I'll say it again: great camera.
Dan, I do see what you're seeing in those 100% crops, and you will see that pattern in print. But 1) you have to print like 24x36 or larger, and 2) you have to be as far away from the print as you are from your monitor when viewing those large prints. For any print size at normal viewing distances, this is simply not an issue. I have a really nice 46" tv with a great picture. But, hmmm, when I get up really close to the tv the picture looks like crap. Same thing . . . non-issue.
Get the 7D. You really won't regret it. It has been stated here by others that the 7D is Canon's best crop factor camera to date, and I agree.

I can't find a raw file in that link, but from the London Bridge jpg, clearly the photographer significantly underexposed the scene to hold the highlights in the sky. Likely, the in-camera jpg processing algorithm then boosted the contrast and brightness to compensate. You can see how underexposed the foreground elements in the photo are. Maybe -1/stop.
I own a 7D, read some reviews, and they ALL make clear that if you underexpose 7D images, even at low ISO, you will see noise in images.
This is just a scene with excessive contrast, which the photographer made a flawed exposure of. Had they shot it +2/3 stop higher exposure (and not f/11 for gosh sakes), and then used one of any number of processing methods to recover and boost highlight details, none of this would show.
Just a flawed exposure (underexposed), with then shows noise after processing. If you don't like that characteristic, keep a camera with fewer, larger pixels. Or buy a 7D, and expose to the right more in scenes like this. Jack
I have never noticed vertical banding in any of my shots, when properly exposed. I've also never had an issue with low ISO noise when properly exposed. 7D images can take a lot of processing, as long as the exposure is correct the first time.

In my experience, I would word it as
"7D images need a lot of processing, unless you nail the exposure."
Found it much tougher to process 7D files compared to the 1d III and 5D Mark II.
I had exactly the same problem with my 5DMk2 after having the CPU board replaced.
It is not banding but rather some artefacts that can be adjusted.
After having the camera adjusted there is no trace of those vertical bands anymore. I'm not sure what they adjusted though, it only says Readjustment of CMOS and whitebalance on the service sheet.

That implies that the artefacts/bands are not within specifications, and that when a certain body suffers from this, it is malfunctioning. Good to know it seems correctable.
I am curious, do you have a sample from your 5D2 containing the artefacts/banding (before it was fixed)?
