The thing that is holding me back right now, is the highlight banding I have seen in a number of 7D files. Even without PP it is visible. Unlike the shadow banding, that only becomes visible when you alter exposure/push shadows.
What I am curious about: do all 7D's exhibit this highlight banding? Or is it subject to copy variation?

Never ever had a problem. In the DIWA samples you point to with your link perhaps you would like to point to specific examples of this issue. I don't really see them and they don't mention them as part of their evaluation. As a matter of fact they make a point about the camera having the "highest image quality" on several occasions. So I would be interested in knowing where you see these problems.
Please download the London Tower Bridge RAW image and take a look at the sky. There is vertical banding visible. Most prominently at the left and right sides (in the middle). Look at the sky.
I am willing to put up the sample myself, if somebody tells me how to embed a flickr image in this thread.

The sky above Tower Bridge really does have banding. Sadly the 7D is too poor a camera to record it properly and it can't be seen in the photo.

Absolutely nothing on any of my four 24 inch LCD in the studio, total nonsense.
Writing that the 7D is a poor camera, is the sort of thing can put some 7D owners on the defensive. I've never had any issues with my 7D of any sort. Love my 7D. Is it perfect, well, no, but I can't afford a 1 series. The 7D does display more noise in blue sky than my 20D at low ISO, but it smoothes out nicely in PP. Also, with as densely packed as the pixels are, some compromises must be made. I'm willing to put up with something that is easily fixed in post in exchange for all of the capabilities of the 7D.
I guess I can sort of see it, but I'm not sure I would call it "banding" in the sense that the 5d2 has shadow banding because a) it's barely noticeable and b) even the mildest pp would probably get rid of it. It almost looks more like noise to be honest.
I'm on a different screen now, maybe I really do need to replace that other one.
I agree... it doesn't look like 5D2 shadow banding. Still, there are distinct vertical lines (like a pattern). Hence I call it "banding". But maybe it is just noise. I don't know. But it is difficult to kill in PP (NR) because you will loose (some) detail in other areas in the process.
