Wow thanks you guys. Your support is really appreciated.
I want to comment more but I got a bunch of new work I want get out before my last class of the night. It was a balmy -26 today and even though I never went far from the car I still froze body parts.
Hi Kava, right now I am using a 72 mm Nikon polarizer in order to use the Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D wide open in bright light. I take it off in the shade and when in shooting in bright light. And stick in in my pocket or more often than not drop it on the ground. I am looking to get a ND filter but am saving every dime I can make to replace my 58 1.2 AIS Nocturnal. It 's going to take a lot of dimes.
Thanks Cat, It great to have you join the discusion. Did you do some shooting today?
Just so everyone knows Cat is one of my favorite photograpers She is just beginning but has a hell of an eye and is tearing it up in the in the nations capital Ottawa. I hear she is about to start shooting Film with her new Nikon F2 . Watch out for her work she is just awsome photographer with a bright future.
A 28/1.4D has been available locally for a few weeks now at the local pro shop (in fact there were two in the case at one point). $2.5K is a steep price to pay!
Cat is going to kill me. She is my editor and I havnt given her the pass word on the Fm forum mostly because I dont' know what it is My bad.
As far as the price, I have been told twice in the last couple of days that it's my fault the price is going up on the Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D . The fact is with it's hand ground asperical element and unique signature it will always hold it's value, if not go up in price. The fact that people like _____ threw his copy under the bus and sold it, has more to do with Nikon sponsorship than anything else.
It's hard not to be drawn in with the latest and greatest in the Nikon line up but the fact remains the Nikkor 28 mm 1.4 is still the only game in town.
Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D on Nikon D3
Nikkor 24 1.4 AF-D on Nikon D3
Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D on Nikon D3
Nikkor 24 1.4 AFS on Nikon D3
And for those who still insist that the Nkkor 24 1.4 blows away the Nikkor 28 1.4 check out the above photo. Both shot on the same Nikon D3 at the same ISO shutter speed and F 1.4 the and processed the same. The shadow detail of the Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D lens is clearly visible.
Perhaps my aesthetic acuity isn't up to snuff (or my monitor sucks) but with the exception of the first truck shots (? Identical lighting) can't say I appreciate a difference either definitively or readily discerned in the subsequent images. The two lenses seem amazingly well matched, striking when you consider the 28's age and all. But having said that, they both are pretty damned amazing performers.
Is it perhaps because the contrast on the 28 @1.4 is a little lower or maybe the result of better field illumination of the 28 across the entire frame or perhaps the exposure parameters were subtly different?
I was once told that the 28 f1.4 was called the 'National Geographic' lens due to the number of cover/featured shots in that mag that were taken with it. I was really expecting the value of the 28 1.4 to fall after the release of the 24 f.14 -- and it has, a little.

I don't know who in their right mind would pay _more_ for a 28 f/1.4 than the 24 f/1.4.

First, I honestly cannot compare 24mm vs 28mm because they are such different focal length, but if I have to I would say I personally would pay more for 28mm. I think 28mm has higher image quality, especially for its shadow details and coma control for night photography. Manual aperture control is also crucial for video shooting. There are areas where 24mm is better at, but I still prefer how 28mm paint the picture rather the 24mm.
