p.146 #1 · which lens has the most 3D POP?

"The key thing to notice here is that there is no difference in the 3D “pop” of the image at f/1.4 versus f/4. That makes the lens exceptionally versatile, with aperture not the determining factor for image quality."

Well, to me f/1.4 pops more in that shot ...

Here’s another shot from the same series with the classic minibus – this time freshly processed in Lightroom.
This is the legendary Kässbohrer Setra S6 with a special paint job, built around 1960. It comes factory-equipped with a lot of analogue-era technology – and, as you can clearly see, a generous amount of 3D POP was also part of the original construction spec.

The lens is the 50mm Planar 1.4 ZA – certainly not the newest or most clinically sharp design out there. It’s no CA monster, but wide open it can show some chromatic aberration or colour fringing. Modern lenses might handle that better. Still, I keep coming back to this lens because I genuinely enjoy its rendering and character.

Since some have seriously claimed that I 'manipulated' sharpness or other aspects in this series, here’s a quick breakdown of my Lightroom processing:

Exposure and white balance adjusted

Contrast boosted (the scene was quite flat with little light/shade contrast)

The overexposed sky was toned down

A subtle vignette was added for mood

And of course: sharpening and noise reduction applied as usual

That’s it – just basic raw development to bring out what was already there.

Hmmm jojib, I have to disagree with you on this one, as being a long time portrait photographer I just see too many negatives that make this photo distracting for me.

1. The forward hand is the brightest part of the photo and my eye is drawn to it, rather than on the womans face, which is in the dark. A handheld reflector or small flash here would help balance her face with the rest of the body.

2. The 35mm perspective distortion shows up here way more than in your other photos, notice how her angled forward hand is almost as

I will say this,

If you look at fashion magazines there are a lot of images shot with a wide angle. Even some much wider than 35mm. It seems to be trending that way.

This minibus is amazing. Is it yours?

The 50ZA is rated as still amazingly sharp those days.

Compared to when you posted the image earlier I think you have increased the vignetting, the saturation a,d the local contrast more. The 2024 version was nicer, less impact but more realism and alredy then discussed thanks to being an excellent image.

So, a schlimmerbesserung to my eyes. That's interesting. Have your preferences changed, or is it the massive amount of overprocessed images causing you to boost your image? Or is it me - my old eyes have started to hurt more the last years probably from seeing more of the augmented very colorful world on-line?

I hate to see this thread drop off the front page so I'm going to suggest another lens with great 3D Pop, at least in one of the ways I interpret it: FUJIFILM XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens.

Whadda ya think?

Definitely it qualifies for my 'monitor breaking' look so it's 3D for sure. Besides, it's a Fuji so the colours pop! Thanks for sharing.
