Yay, 50P fest Great lens, but be aware of its limitations. In other words, don't expect sharpness close up and wide open. At more distance (4-8m), it has a lovely look, and stopped down to f/2.8 or f/4, it starts being really damn sharp, but around f/4, watch out for focus shift

After hammering out some processing issues with the Ricoh GXR dng files, I committed to the little bugger after having shot Zeiss and CV glass on a D700 for the past couple years. I started with adapted and already owned CV SL-II lenses (20/40/90), then added a ZM 25/2.8 and used that almost exclusively for a couple months, then picked up the CV 15/4.5, CV 35/1.2 v2 last week, and today received the ZM 35/2.8. I'm loving this kit!!

Minolta MD 70-210/4 has just arrived. Not a bad lens at all.

Quick, dirty test shot. This guy is now singing in the old walnut tree in my garden.NEX5N,heavily cropped - only 10% of the original JPEG, sharpened as usuall for posting,70-210/4 at 200mm wide opened.Sharpness is quite good, only CAs a bit disturbing.Bokeh is very smooth too.And all this for only 48 Euro shipped.

Bought a Zeiss N24-85 off the board here in native mount and sent it off to Conurus...surprisingly, the conversion took a lot less than his stated six months or so (about two months). Just got it back yesterday and now putting it through its paces. So far, nothing short of Wow!

I'm not too happy with how these two examples converted out of LR and reconstituted in Photobucket (lightened, and contrast jacked-up a bit). Oh well, here goes. I really like the originals for the color treatment, contrast, and punch of this lens. More on that after the photos, so you aren't overly prejudiced, at least no more than this set-up.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c80/gunzorro/036N8867-2.jpg

The lens is the Nikon AF 18-35/3.5-4.5D ED IF, shot on Canon 1Ds2 with Fotodiox adapter. It's the poorman's 17-35 ED. Shot #1 at 35mm and the variable aperture conversion around f/9, and the second shot at 18mm @ f/6.7 (between 5.6 and 8 setting). The interesting things about this lens are the variable aperture (which you don't think about in AF/automated exposure modes), and to find there is a slight vari-focal effect (exact focus at 35mm leaves severe back focus at 18mm if simply zoomed out). Each end of the focal range needs to be re-focused.

I just wanted to decide today whether to keep this lens as an Alt when I sell off my Nikon bodies in the near future. I bought the lens about a month ago to try on the D7000. The lens took some great shots, but the poor AF accuracy of the center point AF has finally convinced me to dump the Nikon stuff. I'll keep a few of the lenses with manual aperture adjustment, like the 60/2.8D macro. But otherwise, I'll concentrate on Canon bodies and lenses, with a sideline of Alt.

The lens isn't perfect, especially in the corners (like the new Zeiss 25/2, but worse, but only $200+ compared to over $1500. Center and middle frame are very, very nice. Even extremely sharp in center. And light weight! What a great lens to carry around, even with its limited focal range.

So that's my latest Alt lens, with a Leica R 28-70 on the way. Fingers crossed that won't be a garbage lens -- reviews are mixed.

You must be the only person in the known universe to dump Nikon due to AF issues and switch to Canon, as opposed to the other way around. What is the problem exactly?

I just bought two Leica R lenses and am waiting for the adapter to arrive. If I'm pleased with the performance I plan to put a EOS Leitax mount on them. I got the semi-working Leicaflex body as a lenscap with the 50/2

Carsten -- I know -- it's a weird situation, and I'm not the norm anyway!

I have had unexpected OOF shots -- very unpredictable. I charted the center AF sensor with the help of a fellow on DPR forums, by bracketing in on eight angles to establish sensitivity, mapping the sensor and finding it was more of amorphous "cloud" than a concrete and distinct point. The actual measurement was approximately 3X the width and height of the indicated area, with "webbing" between the cross-members. Due to Nikon's programming, areas of high contrast detail on the edge of this large nebulous sensitivity will pull focus off the center (desired) area of the sensor. (For some shooting, Canon provides a setting for a "zone" of related sensors that are intended to do a similar function. I think Nikon has an expanded feature too.)

I've been used to Canon, where the center area noted for estabishing focus (glows red) is almost surgically exact, and smaller by almost 2/3 size compared to that D7000. The earlier D1X is more like the Canon size and distinct sensitivity, but unfortunately the IQ of that sensor is not up to my needs. For most people, up until the 5D3 (and possibly the 1DX even moreso), the Nikon AF has been superior for general focusing.

From my tests, the center point AF title goes to Canon, although I know most people prefer Nikon for outer AF points and active follow-focus for moving subjects. Those aren't of interest to me, but precise metering and AF center point selection are.

I'd set the D7000 aside for nearly a year, but before selling it, I decided to give it a fresh go and buy a few different lenses to try on it. I was impressed with its overall IQ, rivaling the 1Ds2 I was comparing it to. But exposure was not as much to my liking, and definitely it failed in head-to-head focusing on the same exact subjects as the 1Ds2 -- critically. I had used the D7000 for a couple event assignments about a year ago, and almost totally got hosed by missed focus shots. Luckily, I had about 50% acceptable from Day One, then switched to 60D and pulled the job off without anyone being the wiser. But it was an awful and scary feeling when I reviewed the shots from Day One that night, tired and wanting to sleep.

Much as I love the color and the detail when shots turn out on the Nikon body, I can't say it is good camera for center-point AF and MF shooters.

I guess I've been trained into the Canon center point strength (or weakness, depending on your POV), and expect that whatever is under that little rectangle to be in focus, and nothing else that is closer than its outside edge.

Added to that, the Nikon flange/sensor distance is not as Alt-friendly as Canon's, it becomes simple math on where I should spend my money. I gave it a try, straddling both camps, but in the end, it doesn't make economic sense. I waited to see if the D800 would totally excite me, and unfortunately, interesting as it is, I can't commit to buying it and getting sidetracked further.

I'm holding onto a few AIS and "D" lenses that I can use as Alt and have on hand for when/if I get that craving to try a Nikon body again.

Please understand this is not a condemnation of Nikon, or its overall IQ.

Is it common knowledge/a fact that Nikon AF is superior to Canons?

Well with the D800 the left side sensors are back-focusing while using the 24/1.4G.

I think so too. There are some excellent Nikkors and there are some excellent Ls with lots of "good" and mediocre lenses on the side. It seems to be about the same. Nikkors might be a little less expensive (on average) for the good stuff - maybe.

Most of the internet chatter I hear tends to say that Nikon AF is slighty "better" than Canon. I have not heard of many switching to Canon for AF. I have never owned a Canon so I can't comment on exactly why....

Pre-2012, Nikon had the advantage on focus tracking, outer AF points, and even some focus acquisition speed, and was particularly celebrated for its flash system.

The gap narrowed considerable for Canon's "sports" bodies like the 1D IV.

Now, it's a whole new ballgame on the AF and Flash, with Canon seemingly taking the lead (or taking away the lead advantage) for the first time in years.

Although not revolutionary, the 5D3 seems to have taken the edge over the D800 in these areas.

It's yet to be seen how the 1DX fits in, but it's expected to be the top dog in several areas outside of the super resolution of the D800, and more modest D4.

Fun times!

For me, the equation is: keep the Nikon gear I'm not happy with?, or sell it to fund a 5D3?, which after using a 5D2, I'm sure I'll be happy with. I may even consider a used D800 in a year or two, so I'll keep a nest egg of Nikon lenses.

until the new releases, and restricted to non-pro bodies (anything below a 1D), yes. for comparable bodies canon wasn't even close anywhere till they released the 7D (which seems to almost match the d300). the 5DmkII vs D700 comparison is not even close. this is all just conventional wisdom among photographers as i've encountered it, and i think based mostly on focus tracking ability, not my personal opinion – i just turn autofocus off when i've used any of these cameras.

I am not sure if it is that easy, but it is commonly stated as a reason for switching, especially in the pro bodies.

Jim, I have no experience with the D7000, so I cannot comment. Sounds weird. My D3 has been rock-solid, but clearly a pro body performs at a different level than a high-end consumer body.

The 5DIII does sound like it will be the first Canon body in a while to nail a range of different things. In fact, apart from the fixed focusing screen and the potentially boringness of nearly identical specs, it sounds like it will be a rock-solid camera.

I have the D800 on order (changed from the D800E to the D800 today after seeing Lloyd Chambers' D800 vs. Leica S2 comparison), and I have been nervous about this. It is both more and less than I was hoping for, to be honest. Gradually though, I am getting quite excited. It sounds like it has a hell of a sensor.

Just picked up one of these guys:

http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/lens/nfd/data/zoom/nfd_50~300_45l.html

Saw some very impressive images with it, and it's supposed to have virtually zero CA, which would be awesome. I'll hopefully have it Friday and can give it a little workout this weekend. Sort of excited, though it's a rather large lens.

Good news is I got it for what appears to be a very good price ($550). Other completed sales I saw on eBay were in the $900-$1100 range....pictures and description show it to be in extremely good condition too (and the seller is a highly rated camera dealer with a return policy).

Hopefully it's good. It appears to be somewhat of a rare lens, and while some people have said it's absolutely stellar, there have been some reports of duds. We'll see. The returnability makes me happy (as does the fact that I could likely sell it for a profit).

Carsten -- I'm sure you'll love the D800. Looking forward to your shots with it. Yes, I'm sure the higher end Nikon bodies would be better for precision focus points. Still, for most people the D7000 will take very good shots. I have the full set-up, with SB700 flash, battery grip, and lenses. So I gave it a good shot and it will probably find a good home.

Jordan -- Nice score! I'm sure we'll all want to see what you discover on the IQ.

Sigma AF APO 500mm F/4.5 (Sony/Alpha/Minolta mount)

I can't find any images of it on line so I'll take a few of it later.. Until then it's the AF version of this lens:

http://www.macrophotos.com/avian/lenses/P1110465.jpg
http://www.macrophotos.com/avian/lenses/P1110466.jpg

Looks identical except the finish is that silky rubber and the focus barrel is inset with a distance scale window. I can't wait to try it out!
