Yea, I have had no less than 6 or 7 lenses pass through his shop. Even met him for coffee once... I just figured since I already have one, I would see if someone around here might want one for their mirror-less cam before sending it off.
if you got it for a great price and are willing to sell it for a similarly great price i'd take it for my film camera, but i don't need a second one badly enough to pay typical prices now. i currently have one that i gave a reversible a-mount conversion, but it's too much trouble to convert back and forth so i mostly just use the 50/1.4 on my film camera.

Nice pick ups! The yellowing on the Rokkor can be reversed if you ever feel the need. The 100mm hood is the #5 I believe.... But the #4 will work fine I'm sure. Add a #2 for the 35mm and you will be set.

Yup, me too, but it was really butchered. I cannot quite imagine how you would make a scratch that nasty while keeping a level head. It was about 1/3 of the way round, perhaps 3/4 of the way to the edge, and multiple times on top of each other. As if they took a screwdriver, wrapped it in a piece of cloth and went scritch-scratch all the way round until all the dust was gone, not realizing the metal was making contact through the cloth. Nasty. I hope he doesn't flip out and accuse me of having done it. It is actually possible to overlook it with the right light but once you see it, oh boy. I thought of asking him for a rebate instead, but in the end I just didn't even want it.
Too bad, it was otherwise in nice shape, other than a little loose lip on the rubber grip, and the price was decent too.
Anyway, I just picked up a Contax 50/1.7 which wfrank didn't want, as a consolation prize I had the Contax adapter on the way anyway, so why not. I can just resell it when I have enough money for a ZF.2 50/1.4....Show more →
The refund came through from the 35-70/3.4, and I used this money and the proceeds from selling another lens, to pick up a ZF.2 28/2, so all is well now
Robert, I am very sorry to hear about your ordeals. I hope that it works out well in the end. Their story is so full of holes that hopefully even they will realize it, and just set things right.

My Contax 50/1.7 arrived, and is in very nice shape indeed, but it has that white powder look on the focusing rubber. Does anyone have a tip for how to get it black again?

I think I get what you meant now I'll try using it for a few days and see what happens to it. Maybe I'll cut down on the washing of hands a bit to speed it up.

I had the same problem with a Planar 50/1.4 that I recently bought. The rubber grip was a bit white and felt slightly sticky. I just rubbed it with a sponge+dishwashing soap+water and it looked (and felt) a lot better after that (pretty much the same as my Distagon 28/2.8 and MP100/2.8).

Remove the rubber focus grip from the lens, and use a toothbrush with dilute comet cleanser or other bleach powder product. The diluted water/bleach powder will clean the oils that have built up over time and should improve the appearance.

I use a toothbrush and silicon spray. Apply to toothbrush sparingly, rub on grip, wipe with tissue, done.
Jim is probably an old pro but for us common folk ya don't typically want to remove the grip if not absolutely necessary! They can become stretched, need re-glueing, and can rip or break in some cases.

Jim, I am reluctant to remove the rubber from the lens, since it might stretch a bit and not bounce back. The lens is from '89. I will try the other tips carefully, and see how far I get. Thanks everyone!

Oooops, checking Pebble Place it appears you are right. The 100/2.8 uses the #5, but not the 100/2.
I like to use the #4 with my MP 100/2.8. The #5 is longer but it's not needed. The MP 100/2.8 has just about no flare at all anyway and the front element is already recessed.

Carsten -- I use the automotive vinyl restorer, Armorall. Apply to a Q-tip (so as not to apply too much, or accidentally smear the lens glass), and rub over the entire rubbery surface. Then use an old toothbrush to work into all the tiny nooks and crannies in the ribbing/knurling. Finally, wipe with a dry, lint-free cloth (even paper towel will do) to remove any excess slickness.
I also use this treatment on the camera body leatherette/rubber on used camera bodies, after a gentle cleaning with paper towel and mild soap and water (or rubbing alcohol) -- looks and feels like new when finished.
