p.1 #1 · Help! 5D Mk II Mirror Hit Elmarit 28mm R 2.8 E55 Rom

My Elmarit 28mm R 2.8 is 377XXXX E55 Rom version. The rear protection shroud is metal type screw in type. When shot in infinity, it hit slightly on the rear shroud. After removing the shroud, it is ok.

Now I a bit worry after removing the rear shroud, whether the glass elements in Elmarit 28mm are still intact and as secure as originl. Will the whole glass just drop off after long time of usage? Actually what is the use of the rear shroud?

Some photo taken as below and if any forumer can advise?

Thanks

#1- Original Condition

#2 - Rear Shroud Slightly Protuding Out

#3- Metal Shroud

Removing the rear shroud is the way to go. I was comprehensively told it would not make the rear element fall-out.

Otherwise you could shoot just short of infinity then the shroud may clear the mirror.

Some photos after the metal shroud was removed..

if removing the shroud will not have adverse impact to the lens, then I will be very happy to keep this wonderful lens with 5D MK II.

Not as convenient, but mounting lens with focusing distance set at a closer distance, then using live view eliminates the mirror clash at infinity problem with this, or any other lens (excepting those that have a long part in the back that scrape or jam up against the mirror box)

Yes..Agree with you. Most of the time, I used this lens for landscape and infinity shot is important. It will be inconvenient to activate live view, then mount the lens to take photo and right before the mirror flap it back and unmount the lens again..

No, ansochrome means that you can just focus it to a short distance, turn on live view, focus to infinity and take the shot, then focus back to a short distance and turn off live view. There is no need to unmount the lens. The mirror only hits the shroud at/near infinity focus, right?

I see.. Ya..I didn't think of that. Only thing is I couldn't use view finder for infinity and must always remember to close focus before deactivate live view.

You can also file, sand or have a metal worker use a lath to take away enough material so the mirror won't hit anymore.
The shroud protects the inside again damage and dust and other filth. It is better to put it on.

Dare not to file the mirror as the camera still under 2 years plus warranty. May be will get another crop body to use this wonderful lens.

Guys, I have an 28mm elmarit-r V2 with the protruding rear shroud just like the original poster.. My shroud was removed as well and about a month later I found the rear element sitting in my lens cap(!) when I went to use it one day..

Removing this shroud is not a good idea.. The rear element will eventually work itself out of the socket.. luckily it happened while it was stored and didn't fall out while on the camera walking around which would have probably damaged the camera and the rear element at the same time..
