At first I thought the pentax was the real sweet one, but the OM seems to behave itself better. It's 370 grams, I think, but feels lighter./

Did you find Oly 200/5 better than Pentax 150 on the NEX?

The jury is out on that one Peire

Here they are next to each other:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2552/5836779440_2ff91f76ab_z.jpg

My intial impressions, which may be totally wrong:

The Pentax may have more CA issues. At first I was convinced it was much sharper, but here is the OM 200 last nite:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3146/5837105718_9dcfc556b1_b.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2479/5836433049_d979179751_b.jpg

now the pentax 150, two nites before in a different location, but same mtns--very different weather

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3311/5836446297_92cbb81e8a_b.jpg

note highest all green hill center left. That's where I was shooting the 200 shots.

The funny thing is, a quarter mile out the Pentax is really crisp, but less so at infinity. The 200 can produce some pretty acceptably sharp images at infinity. It's also quite good closer.

My "control" last nite was the OM 135/2.8 (330g), which is probably better than either.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3251/5836511467_8a5ee59670_b.jpg

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5144/5836432123_70910e1cdb_b.jpg

on this last one you can make a direct comparison 135 to 200, using the first 200 image above.

the more I look the more impressed I am with the 200/5

Thank you uhoh for valuable feedback.135/2.8 seems to be the sharpest of all.I currently look for some good IQ,small and lightweight 200mm prime for my NEXes.Got Nikkor 200/4 AI - very good ,but still hunting for Oly 200/5 to compare.

I doubt you would gain any sharpness with the OM 200, but it is quite a bit lighter. The OM 135/2.8 is really good, but my new Steinheil 135/2.8 auto-D-tele-Quinar (yes it has the dashes on the lens!) is just as small and nearly as light. It's a knock down drag out for sharpness--I think the steinheil is sharper but could be wrong. For bokeh the steinheil is legendary. Very Very smmoth color rendering. Keep you eye out for that one---still as cheap as the OM but very sexy build--most beautiful lens I have now. I'll post pics later.

Here is one of my sharpest OM 200/5 shots:

well, i think this may be the gold standard at 300--or at least a benchmark. Shoots great close too, later I will post samples.

Thanks again for useful feedback uhoh.

It seems that at infinity Oly 200/5 is not sharp enough and has too much CAs (compared to Nikkor 200/4 AI).As for 300/4.5 EDIF Nikkor - I had it for a couple of months - not bad a lens but could have been sharper stopped down and CAs were quite pronounced up to f5.6.

The Tamron 300/5.6 SP that I use to have was really sharp and contrasty on NEX with plenty od 3D look and handy close up facility, but presented nasty multicolor CAs even in low light conditions - this was the main reason

EDIT - If you set peaking level to High, then you can see peaking in mf assist at 7x and sometimes at 14x if you have some nice sharp edges in the image. So, my big bummer has gone away and I continue to play. Anyone else?

Here's my first image using peaking mode with the Zeiss biogon C 35mm:

It might just be perfect with Douglas' viewer set up. I'll use a remote trigger. It's far more steady than normal holding.

http://www.overgaard.dk/thorstenovergaardcom_copyrighted_graphics/Telyt400_68_in_a_box_640w.jpg

credit Thorsten Overgaard

It's actually a very fast focus, and smooth, with the little thumb lock

"For those of you who have not had the
opportunity to handle the 400 Telyt-R, it
is extremely light… much lighter than the
80~200/f4 Vario-Elmar, for instance…
yet twice as long – over 38.5cm or 15”!
This lightness is obtained by using a
simple achromatic doublet in what is
essentially a long hollow tube. Leitz
replaced the normal helicoid focusing
threads with three polished rails. The
focusing tube has a lock-button that falls
naturally under your thumb. You press the
button and push or pull on the front tube
to focus. Releasing the button locks the
focus. The system is intuitive to use,
though there is a short learning curve.
Once you’re used to it, it’s incredibly
smooth and blindingly fast!"

"....Leica made a 60mm extension tube
(14182) to fit between the lens head and
the mount- tube to reduce the minimum
focus distance to about 2 meters (6 ft).
I’ve not used this tube, but have used the
14134-* extension tubes between the lens
and camera body with very good success."

"I’m told that because of the simple, two
element design, there is some curvature of
field. Well, if it’s there, I cannot see it.
What I do see is a razor sharp lens with
creamy smooth backgrounds."

"At 400mm f6.8 Telyt-R is a sunny day
lens, even with ISO 400 film. It is
virtually free of flare and provides a
brilliant, high contrast image. However,
there is some noticeable vignetting when
it’s used with a 2x converter."

from nice description:

nice personal review:

pretty famous bird guy who loved the lens:

another sample--missed focus slightly

I think there is one at keh right now for around 340, which is pretty good considering it sold for an incredible price back in the day. At the height of the dollar in 1981 I think it was still over 2K in the USA.

PS this one is SO normal compared to the next two coming.

FYI to all-- this may be known but is new to me.

I have only tested RF 50mm and 85mm, but these lenses can close focus to the macro level on the nex.

I bought an old kilfitt macro setup which just arrived. It included an LTM tube--well much more than a tube, because it has a very slik focus onboard. This tube is designed to subsitute for a visoflex when desired. It's range is 50-57mm.

LTM male on the mount side, and female on the lens side.

I put an 85 and a 50 LTM on it and found myself right away at a sharp, near celluar level.

It's a revelation to me

I'll put up some shots when I get a chance.

interesting Ken

OK here it is:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3124/5862152482_492b7ffdb8_b.jpg

Kilfitt 90/3.5 Macro.
note two focus rings...

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5149/5862152206_a04a56119a_b.jpg

Canon LTM RF 85/1.8 on the kilfitt focus tube.

OMG

grabbed my LTM RF 50/1.2

and screwed it on there-- I was loking for the bokeh

I was pretty excited, so all shots you see are handheld

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2708/5861601931_1725231652_b.jpg

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5269/5862153516_9908d41551_b.jpg

these are not crops, how close was I? Here is a gross but effective way to show (my thumb)
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5022/5862154182_fc0da69a71_z.jpg

again no crop, but smaller so nobody throws up.

How about the 85 shown above?

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3094/5861604045_7c51176c19_b.jpg

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5107/5862156390_98de6e4ccf_b.jpg

all these are teeny flowers, but how close?

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5229/5861631971_dbed8617d2_z.jpg

the kilfitt focus tube ranges from about 50mm to 57mm, so you could get exactly the same results with a cheap EBAY M39 macro tube.

I was shooting HANDHELD wide open at about 400 iso to get a fast shutter speed. I think it's pretty obvious some very respectable captures could be made with a tripod and really good focus.

anyway revelation to me

oh, what about the kilfitt 90/3.5 on it's own (with focusing mount of course)?
