What about getting an Nikon F to Sony E mount adapter (also available for Nikon G lenses) and use your existing lenses with the Nex for a start. Once you get a feeling for it (or not) you can add other (smaller/ lighter) lenses or sell it without further losses if you do not like the experience?

Oh I got the Nikon G to Sony E adapter immediately. All my Nikon lenses could be mounted. However, in the last year, I replaced pretty much all my Nikon non-G lenses with G lenses. The only non-G lens I have left is Nikon 28-105 Af-D F/3.5-4.5 1:2 Micro. For shooting movies especially, I find the Nikon G lens manual focus is not as quiet and smooth as, for example, old Nikon E lenses, Also with G lenses and an adapter, one never knows exactly what aperture you are at, unless you are shooting wide open. I have paired the adapter currently with my 35mm 1.8 DX G lens.

My main camera is Nikon D800 and I want to limit my investment in Sony NEX, but if there is something not expensive and interesting, I might be interested. Thanks!
best bargain for virtually no money imho is the rokkor MC PG 50/1.4. you can get one for around $50 and it has some beautiful color and bokeh and is very sharp stopped down for landscape work.
the rokkor 24/2.8 with the 49mm filter thread is also very good at short distances and nice and compact. the nikkor 28/2.8 ais is fantastic for short distances with nice field curvature to smooth out bokeh in the corners, not so great at a distance.
the best bang for buck period is imho the contax g 45/2. it costs nearly $400 now, but it matches or beats anything under $2000 on the NEX.

Thank you very much, I will research all of the above lenses...Show more →

Except that it has the bokeh of a 50 Summitar.

Nice. Do you like/hate it or are you still getting acquainted?

You'd really go for the Contax G 45 at around $400 and that required adapter (metabones = extra $$$ + weight) over options like the Sigma 30mm 2.8 for less than half the price ($200 and half the weight) or Sony's own 50mm f1.8 OSS which is only $300, is a bit faster, native mount again so you don't have to mess with adapters and also have the option to have auto focus when you want it, plus a very effective IS system which can come in pretty handy at these midtele focal lengths ??
I've had all the contax G's and certainly think they are fine lenses, and certainly a deal as far as Zeiss optics go, but didn't find the lens any better than what I'm seeing from the Sigma 30 or Sony 50. Though bear in mind I'm merely going from memory and files shot with the NEX5n with the Contax and the NEX7 with the current lens so I dont have any A/B comparisons but I am pretty familiar with both lenses.
I always hated the binding Kipon adapter, and the Metabones while functional was just so big and heavy, especially when mounted to some otherwise hefty lens full of brass and glass

it's not that bad, at f/2.8 and smaller it's probably slightly above average, but with those da** hexagons. wide open it's bokeh is only as bad as your average nifty fifty (probably better than the non g nikon one).

i'm lovin the image quality. it actually makes most of my lenses look better not worse. the tri-nav is great. the evf is fantastic except that the eyecup is complete sh** – i'm gonna have to re-appropriate a different one from something else. the grip is excellent for handholding comfortably for long periods of time, but not especially good for having my fingers fall on the controls where i want them. i think once i have more time with it i'll come to love the controls (and never use the menus), but give me a week or two to decide for sure how i feel about it. any tips from your own usage?
Three from the last few days. All with NEX 7. The second and third, taken with the Voigtlander 15mm, had their magenta corners repaired with Cornerfix.

yes, yes i would. i've never shot with a lens that is as good across the frame from f/2.8 to f/11 (including the 40 cron, 50 cron, zm 50/2, and a host of slr lenses). it's extremely good at f/2 as well, but my canon FL 55/1.2 is a hair sharper there. plus, it has the wonderful zeiss color, contrast, and "look". i have not shot with the new sigmas, but f/2.8 makes them much less usable for me (available darkness and all). the sony 50 doesn't look like it compares optically, though it looks to be a fine lens and probably better for portraits than the g 45.
as for usability, everybody has different needs and reactions, but my kipon adapter is nice and smooth and bothers me less than the focus by wire rings on the sony lenses. autofocus is a negative for me because i never use it and it makes manual focus suck. image stabilization would be nice, but i'd have to test it myself to see how useful it is – i found oly's IBIS to be very helpful while sony's IBIS seldom helpful.

The Summitar's not that bad either, but there is prettier.

The eyecup does suck. If you find anything, please share.
Tips... if you're using the EVF to zoom focus, I find it easiest to preset the zoom to where I'm planning to put the subject using the LCD. Just like the other NEXs, as long as you don't turn it off, it remembers the last selected position. That way you don't have to deal with the multi-touch wheel with the camera to your eye. Will think of more later. I am being beckoned now.
Snapsy, you are really showing the capability of the kit lens. Excellent job on all of your SF area photos.
Here are a couple of grabs from the city today. These were taken through the window of a moving vehicle (I was the passenger) with 5N + Nokton 40. The processing is "out of camera" (LR default).

I have to be honest: I believe the lens tests, but I'm still waiting to see some exceptional pictures from the Sigma 30 in this thread. Sure, the photographer behind the camera is the bigger factor, but you almost can't help but run into amazing G45 pictures here.
the sigma 30 is fantastic on the 7.
the 24 MP shines so detailed .... great.
buy it and if you dont like it give it back.
but i would miss every photoday without it.

The Sigma 30 looks like a brilliant lens, but I'm just not liking the rendering. I guess I'm too much of a 'Zeiss' guy and just don't like the rendering style. The best I can say about it is that it really does resemble the Sony 50 OSS in rendering style, making for a good 3-lens kit. Unfortunately the Sony 50 OSS is probably on its way out of my kit for the same reason, excellent lens but too Leica in its rendering for my taste.
