p.2 #1 · Sigma 85/1.4 - my experience

I can speak for myself and my friend who also ordered Sigma 85mm. Both copies are exceptional and there are absolutely no issues with them. Just so you know I used to own 85L original and II and sold 85LII after acquiring Sigma. Yes, there are areas that I liked on 85L more but IMO Sigma is sharper and IQ in general is very comparable to 85L. This is my first ever Sigma and I love it.

I don't get it - what's the point of this thread, from the OP's perspective?

To try and convince people that the Sigma brand is terrible and not up to the standards of the vastly more expens...er...vastly superior 85L.

Reason is that I am getting PM questions asked by people who are experiencing same issue. Does it answer your question? Do you own this lens or just walking around?

i have this lens, the 85mm 1.8, 85mm 1.2 ii (currently 2 copies), i have found the sigma to be very accurate. just as accurate as the 85 L ii as far as focus. the only thing it can't do is 1.2.

I expected your experience to be described in the original post based on the thread title. It wasn't. It was your opinion which you attempted to substantiate as objective by saying you asked other photographers and "got the same opinion from all."

So you're saying you sent the lens back because of these "jerky" AF movements, even though it was a phenomenon independent of the AF accuracy/speed?

That is how I guess you understand, yes I returned lens back because of this only issue. I don't think this is normal for any lens and brand. Yes after 3-5 jerks it locks AF and it is accurate;
However I also specified that it has very interesting bokeh and build, not sure why it cased your aggressive style.

Breitling65,

Are you an employee of, or do you have some other affiliation with, Canon?

Tell the truth, please.

Gotta walk around a lot if you wanna be ontime.

Listen, Leonid, can you describe a bit more closely what was that AF "jerkiness" like ? For example, AF can overshoot and oscillate (popularly called "hunt"), it can creep, it can drive to the focus distance limit ("search"), it can stutter/chatter in Servo AF mode like 85L does etc.

Another question: Does Sigma still use that black rustproofing compound for the barrel finishing coat of their EX lenses?

Seems odd to return a lens just because it has a jerky action. If it focusses OK and has good IQ it strikes me as being overy picky to write it off because you don't like the manner in which it attains focus. Similar to returning the lens because the font used on the front didn't please you, or the Sigma finish is not to your liking.

But each to his own..

I don't think you need to worry about brass, aluminum or plastic rusting.

Effect is interesting, when you prefocus on something it doesn't jerk/hunt at all. However if you try to focus again on same part of the object it does 3-5 small jerks (hunts) before it is finally locking. That is annoying and happened on my both bodies, low lights or good lights doesn't meter. Same on different aperture/ISO settings.

If you read my post I said - For anyone who could bypass this issue - lens is very interesting in bokeh and well build even if missing weathersealings.

From personal experience there is sample variation with the 85 1.4, just like with all lenses actually.

The first one I bought was awful, but the second was right on the money. There should be no excessive hunting/jerking with a properly functioning 85 1.4

Hmm, it's all about personal preference, i see nothing wrong by Op's comment. If i don't have 85LI&2, i would try some and get a good copy.
