Breitling, so go ahead and try another copy. Why would you reject this option? If I can have my straight flush beat by a higher straight flush, chances of getting bad copy are much higher than that.

p.3 #2 · Sigma 85/1.4 - my experience

I got to play with mine for a few hours yesterday. I used it on my 1d3 and it was flawless, focus was snappy and actually rather quick. it was my first chance to mess around with the sun out, wonderful color saturation.

this same lens gave me some trouble on my 1Ds3, 7d and 1d. I guess you could call it hunting, but it seemed more like it was stuck in a loop, focusing back and forth a tiny amount endlessly (more than 20 seconds was the longest I allowed to to loop for). the lighting and contrast was far from what I would call difficult, and in some cases plain old bright.

so yesterday I decided to try it some more. I enjoyed so much on the 1d3 that couldn't bring myself to switch bodies. if I find out that for whatever reason it will only work on the 1D3, it'll be a tough choice (for me) to either return it, or just leave it on the 1D3.

the hunting loop on my copy is very clearly (to me) a problem within the lens, or perhaps compatibility, I don't know. I wouldn't discount anyone's assessment if they experience the same issue. I've read so far that four or five others have had it occur. in each case they've described nearly the same issue I have with mine.

I doubt any working pro would tolerate what I experienced, however I'm not a working pro (or a pro by any stretch of the imagination) so I'll just keep playing with, and enjoying this lens.

p.3 #3 · Sigma 85/1.4 - my experience

Just got this from someone in PM:

hey... just thought i would share. I went to BH today and i had the sigma specailist check it out the 85mm and he said its completly normal the way it was focusing. He said there version of USM is not as smooth as canon and all the sigma lens do that. For my comfort I tried the sigma 50mm and another sigma 85mm and they all focus like that.

I guess we are spoiled by the canon.

In any case that is bad to me, I don't like this....

Sounds very much like "The Princess and the Pea" to me.

My copy of Sigma 14 doesn't do that.

Well, if it would cost $100 as plastic-fantastic I wouldn't care about. $900 is slightly different league to me.

I just received 26 anonymous PM's, and they all said

The Sigma is godly. Surrender to it's glory now.

That was easy.

Paul, glad to see that you are reading fine Europen classics as opposed to watching TV or chatting on Twitter.

I just received one on Friday and have already returned it. It focused great, except when I tried focusing on something pretty far away, then it missed pretty bad. My Canon 85 1.8 the exact same shot. Sad, cause I loved the lens otherwise!

I do watch TV, of course (evidenced by another thread) but I try to strike a good balance between that and a whole range of literature. I'm currently having a good laugh at Dawkins' infantile diatribe "The God Delusion", while I simultaneously research allotment gardening, guitar, speed reading, string theory, kefir, and studying for my PAL and OHEP. Gonna git me a gun!

Please don't become an American, Paul, if you know thy God.....don't git a gun.
Try kefir instead. It is strongly probiotic, splendid taste and a great digestive regulator. Costco carries tubs of pretty good quality kefir very cheap.

After 5 days of tests in any conditions and on both of my bodies (5d2 & 1D mk IV) I decided returning this lens to BH. I also talked to several lens owners here on FM and DPReview, got same opinion from all - AF is very jerky. Interesting that initially I was thinking about "bad" 5D2 AF and low lights effects, but after getting same jerky AF on mk IV and outside in good lights my decision been made.
That was my first Sigma lens & kind of disappointment since lost some time, camera clicks and shipping cost. I guess

Doesn't the 85 1.2L II have shitty focusing speed?

Oh, I've already started making my own kefir. Got some 'grains' from a comrade of the former Soviet Union. Been doing it for a few weeks now. Grains have grown enough for me to gift some to my mother and a friend already. Miraculous stuff. The research continues, nevertheless. Next up is kefir butter and kefir cheese.

Getting a gun because I love venison and I love to know where my meat comes from. No more of that CAFO meat for my family. Not ever. Hunting will be an essential skill again some day, sooner than anyone thinks. Mark my words.

Re: God. Don't get me started. Seriously. I'll surely offend both atheists and theists alike with my pantheist declarations of Truth.

BTW, yes the EF 85/1.2 has shit-slow AF.

OK, I see that you are making your own stuff.....then you shouldn`t need Costco.
I only hope that your hunter-gatherer efforts do not make you go after my stunt ducks......I need those for my photography.
I think we all look at the same old universe....just that pantheists do it thru a UWA lens.
As far as 85 f1.2 AF drive speed is concerned, it is the slowest of all Canon non-macro lenses. However, that has never really caused me to lose many keepers. It is what it is and one makes the best of it.
I am much more concerned about its CA behaviour, but I guess that is a different topic.

Can someone please explain to me what lens jerking is? English is my second language. I never heard anyone use that word to describe a lens. Is this something to ask when buying a used lens.

Do you think it is something we have to debate instead of jerky Sigma AF?

>>Can someone please explain to me what lens jerking is?

that's what measurebaters do.

my copy would 'hunt' for focus back and forth a very small amount and very quickly, without any pause. zip-zip-zip-zip-zip-zip until I stopped it. in very good light.

last night I tried to re-create the problem. I could not. as a torture test I attempted to focus in lower and lower light, damn thing nailed it at levels MUCH darker than I would have ever expected it to. and I mean dark like if anyone complained they couldn't lock focus you would look at them like they were stupid for even trying.

I like this lens more and more each time I use it.
