Agree. There are tons of wide open shots of 24 1.4 and 35 1.4 that were shot at close to the minimum focus range. And, to a point, it has become another cliche.
Here is another one shot at f/4 with manual focus.
i grabbed mine as soon as it went out, my lens is 203xxx (so about 3000th produced). Just for the reference regarding the AF issues (mine is front focusing).
The copy that I got is on its way back. I have used MF exclusively for most of my shots. To be honest, its MF ring is large and comfortable compared to other AF lenses. Still, I miss the feel of MF ring of AIS lenses and Zeiss glasses.
I not really liking the large amount of issues people are having with this lens. For the price it should work out of the box. I will hold off for a bit longer and re-purchase the 35 f2 that I loved and had zero issues with. Can't live with slow inaccurate focus. Most of all I haye not trusting my gear. It seems of late that there have been many more QC issues with these fast prime lenses then with any other lenses.

As a Leica owner, I hear this a lot, and it is a fallacy. Expensive cameras and lenses are higher priced, not because they get more extensive QA, but because their components are more expensive, and in some cases, because they are made in Germany/Japan, instead of the usual factory in Thailand/China.
I wish it would be the case, but it just isn't. Maybe for cine lenses this is the case, but they add another 0 on the price, at least.

it will not really help you, because probably as soon as you purchase new camera, your old lenses might not AF properly too.
Grabbed another D700 two days ago, AF issues with most my lenses. AF fine tune helps though. I guess it will never be good old nikon again. :-(

Mine is perfect out of the box - focus is fast enough for anything I will be shooting it with. Do not get caught up in the internets - try one for yourself. Its funny how people cry about how Nikon never releases new lenses and in 2010 they have the biggest year quite frankly EVER and then people shoot a bowl of jelly beans hand held and say their lens is off...
I am very happy with mine and if it was a defective lens I would just simply get another one not turn my back on the lens (like it actually cares)
I suspect retailers' poor packing method has a lot to do with some issues that end-users encounter. For example, I found out most small plastic air-bubble bags (they only used three) had broken and the box had become pretty much beaten up, when I received mine. Next time, I will pay for shipping and make sure I buy from the places that pack the stuff right.

To some degree, that's simply the nature of very fast lenses. Most folks won't know if a f/2.8 zoom is a little off. But a f/1.4 prime looks horrible if it's slightly off spec.

+1 You have to test the focus of every lens, but, most importantly test fast lenses.

Sure it will be more pronounced on fast lenses, but it is not like there never been fast lenses. Besides, i had issues with 105VR, 20AF-D and 24 AF-D i got recently too.
And if you look at my post about year ago or so, where i wrote that i never needed to send to nikon anything...

Anyone has access to both Zeiss Distagon 2/35 Nikon mount and Nikon 35G? If so, can you please explain what you have observed from f/2 and smaller of both lenses? Thank you.
I get my 35 1.4 Friday, I still have my 35/ZF and will do a fast comparison.
