The AF motor takes up a lot of space, especially in the new f/1.4 primes, since they don't use a ring type motor. There are more elements in the new model too, right?
Just got it yesterday - something different here because I was stuck shoveling snow all day so only could get back to play with the lens just now! Many many many more to come -
Single exposure:
30s | f/5.6 | ISO 200 | D3s | straight out of camera
Does anyone have focus issues with this lens? Diglloyd commented about this problem with both the 35mm and 24mm. Otherwise I've read it is optically outstanding!
^ Mine is dead on with the D3s - when I had the 24G it was also dead on. My serial is 602500. According to the lens serial database the first batch to ship to stores ended at 602335. So I am assuming I got the second/third wave of lenses?
No problems with either one, in my (limited) experience. I wouldn't call the AF snappy, but it certainly seems precise and accurate (no MF adjustments for me).
Of course, there is a small delta in actual vs. intended focal point at times, as one might expect from a lens at f/1.4--but that's a natural limitation of my skill, the nature of the subject, and the D700's AF system, not a sign that something is wrong with the lens.
Sharpness test of the 24G, 35G, and 50G. All shot at f/1.4, ISO 800, from a tripod, with auto focus and ample light. Focus point was on the lower part of the 1 in the upper-right hand corner of the dollar bill. Note that the dollar wasn't perfectly perpendicular to the camera, so the left-hand side and some of the curled edges are slightly out of focus. Same goes for the money clip.
ok here is also a quick comparison (extreme crop) of the 16-35 at f/4 and the 35G at f/4. Of course noone expects the zoom to compare wide open while the 35G is already at peak performance but just for fun. In fact I am pretty sure the 35G is maybe actually a 37mm lens and the 16-35 is closer to 35. But anyway...
