You are shooting the 35G several stops closed at f4 and the 16-35 wide open?
why not shoot them both wide open?
Don't bother. No f1.4 lens in the world will compete with an f4 lens even if it is "wide open". The f1.4 lens would be less sharp, have more CA, less contrast.

I moved the lens relative to the subject. Obviously, the subject was rather close. Nothing was re-sized.
The first shot is the 50, followed by the 24, and then the 35. The 50 clearly has lest contrast than the 24 and 35--but it actually looks surprisingly good here (must be ideal conditions for it). But the 24 and 35 are basically identical. Any notable difference in sharpness between the two seems to be related to minor focus issues. When I focus manually, they're even more similar at these close focusing distances. I haven't had a chance to perform a good comparison, but I think the 24G might be *slightly* better at longer focusing distances.
I suppose you could argue that my 24G is underperforming, but I think this shows just how sharp the 35G is.
I actually rented the 16-35 and it was due back yesterday, so any more comparisons will have to be with the Tamron 28-75 (the only lens I have left in the 35mm range) but we all know how that test is gonna turn out -

This does not make any sense, a lens like a Leica 35 Asph wide open would crush that 16-35 wide open.

I rented it for a weekend. I use the AI-S lens more than any other, so I'm stoked to have autofocus for paying gigs... but the size of this thing...

I cropped the pics and prob did not crop exactly on point - but on the lcd the 35G image seemed to enlarge the label more than the 16-35 at 35mm
Perhaps due to the distortion profile of the 16-35 zoomed out...?
Ok, there were some people asking me for my opinion.
I will say it so. I have been using 35G for two projects now, i will not go into much details, just short observation for those who are on deciding way:
1) for pro it is not much of stretch to get it., i got mine for 1200Eur (without taxes). At 35mm one stop is lot of difference in background separation. And this lens is 85G for wide portraits.
2) 35G is not replacement for 35f2. It's AF speed is sad, it hunts in low light, my copy needed AF microadjust something what i've never needed before. Actually i put a duct tape over my A/M-M switch and left it in manual mode. I am grown up on film camera and in hand i nail focus most of the time without needing to fight with bad placed AF sensors on FX cameras. I will keep f2 for documentary on one body, and alter 35G, 14-24, 24G, 24PCE and 85D on second body.
3) Optically, you can just use 1.4, whatever you throw at it. It is as good as 85D/G. Not as good as 24G, but you wont see it in real life.Stopped down to f2 is OMG LETS DO LAB TESTS quality.
4) It is finally cool 50mm for DX. If you are DX shooter, throw that POS 50G and 35f1.8 or whatever compromises you was making to get your favorite angle of view, sell your cat and get this lens. It is alpha and omega of DX. It acts like WOW quality 50f2 on DX.
5) Y U NO 77mm??!!!!! . Damn too small sun shade too, forget 67-77 filter adapter. will stick mamiya shade on it anyway.
6) i thought that maybe the lens is better then i am and that nikon engineers were deeper thinking then i initially admit. so i will shoot my next wedding (9.Feb) ONLY with this lens to give it real field test :-).
Kittyk, what size of Mamiya hood you're talking about? Do you mean Mamiya 67mm Screw-In Rubber Wide Angle Lens Hood for the 645 55mm f/2.8 Leaf Shutter & 80mm f/2.8 Leaf Shutter Lenses? If so, can you mount 77mm filter on the ring of the Mamiya hood? Thanks.
