If anyone gets one they are not thrilled with, I would be happy to purchase it. I have been trying to get one, but my local shops must be behind the rest.

Anyone not really satisfied with their 35mm f1.4G?

I felt mine is less sharp compared to my previous Sigma 50mm. Not sure if this issue is because 35mm f1.4's sharpness is generally less compared to other f1.4 lenses or my copy has focusing issue.

So far, the pictures I've taken haven't impressed me yet. Hmm...

I think I understand what you are saying or going through. I've gone through this feeling before with other lenses as well soon after purchasing them. But usually, it was a temporary thing. In time, as I became used to a given lens' focal length and other pecularities I got better pictures and learned to be satisified with what I got.

Of note, this occurred to me the first time I got the 85mm 1.4, 24mm 1.4, and 24-70 2.8. Clearly I became satisfied with these lenses and they are now widely accepted as being excellent. (Another lens I felt the same for temporarily was the Canon 135L).

My guess is you are also not yet used to shooting with a 35mm lens @ f1.4 and maybe feeling a bit of buyer's remorse due to the price tag.

I purchased one and sold it on the board a few hours later. It was great, very sharp, good looking pictures, but it didn't seem to have the wow factor that I was looking for. I think it'd be the same for me if/when Nikon comes out with a new 50mm. No matter how good a 35 or 50 are, they just look "normal" to me.

Maybe the best 35mm lens ever made though! It was sweet.

Selling a lens within a few hours seems a bit premature, maybe it was an impulse buy for something that was in your mind going to deliver the stars to your hands or something, and when it didn't you felt it was inadequate?

This happened to me with the 84 f/1.4D. When I got it, I had expected immediate magic, but all I could see was its flaws. Then I learned how to work with it, learned how to deal with it's shortcomings "tamed it", so to speak, and now it's one of my favorite lenses.

Just brought this lens to Nikon Service Center. Turns out the lens behaves well, according to the technician. The less-sharp thing that I pointed to him, is because 35mm is generally less sharp wide open compared to let's say, 24mm. Oh well..

Yes, I have been saying that the 35 1.4G is less sharp than the 24 1.4G wide open. But that is not to say it is not a sharp lens. Nothing says you have to always shoot at f1.4 either.

Anybody have experience with the Canon 35 1.4L? I'm curious what someone who has had that experience would say how it compares to the Nikon 35 1.4G.

I've been loving mine, and I shot with the 35L as my most used lens for all of 2009. The 35G seems to be very equal in regards to sharpness, color, contrast, vignetting, etc. and superior in flare control. I find the bokeh pleasant like the 35L, and of course the 35G autofocuses on a D3 much better than the 35L on a 5DII.

That is great to hear I was on the fence about switching and made the decision based on NIKON coming out with this lens.

I mostly used my 35L as my walkaround lens and really miss it, I get my 35G in today from crutchfield.

Thanks for the link. However, I can't get the real feel of the lens given tons of manipulation from post-production. At least I can say I am not even a bit impressed by those real-life images. What I really want to see is JPEGs straight out of camera instead.

Well all my sample pics that I've posted are SOOC jpeg. Tell me what kind of shots you want me to make and I'll try to do it.

Awesome shoot - the 85 just smokes! The 35 lags a bit behind, I think, but really is the best complementary lens for the 85 at the moment... Hmmm, 50/1.2 with nano coat would be awesome...

Thanks for sharing!

cheers, dave

Guy, thank you for sharing your end result images from the session you did with Steph & Chris. I appreciate that others want to see things as they come out of camera (pre PP) but I enjoy seeing both and am glad you chose to post. By the way, I am more than "a bit impressed" by the images you posted.

Keep up the good work!

Peter, thanks for your rely. What I really want to see is the jpegs straight out of camera with Standard in-camera Picture Control profile, particularly those shot at wide open or near wide open in a high contrast environment. Because I want to know whether or not the new G has CA in some back-lit high contrast scenes. Thanks again.

I can do that. All f1.4 lenses have CA when wide open in such conditions though - it's just a matter of how much.

thanks for the link. however, those engagement pictures were so heavy on the USM/clarity sliders, that (aside from being hard on the eyes) it was hard to tell what was 'the lens' and what wasn't.

(irrelevant to the discussion, but that set was also a bit heavy on the clichéd 'we're-so-very-bohemian' look.)

Just took the 35 out since I got it today, and here is a simple shot at dinner. Nothing special but it is basically straight out of the camera.
