a long shot (pun! heheh).., but i thought i'd see if anyone here has one and what they were looking to get for it, both DG and pre DG's considered.

(No 300-800's, sorry)

Good luck... 800mm is slightly sharper and faster than 300-800

thanks, i also am always at the long end of zooms for birding and the 800mm saves 3 lbs V.S the 300-800 plus the focus and sharpness it's a no brainer for my purposes. not really common though which is the downside from purchase standpoint, more people have the 300-800.
