Also, the main reason this camera even got my attention was because it's got a 35mm lens on it. My favorite focal length. Can't wait to see real-world samples, pricing and availability.

Just cleaning out a few more memorycards from Photokina. As far as I remember the focusing felt strange, but that does not necessarily mean focus by wire. The focusing helicoid (and the moving elements) of the camera will be very small, and very light. The slightly detached feeling might be just a slightly too viscous damping grease.

What I DO remember is that I was surprised by the size. It's actually a lot larger than the pictures would suggest - just like the Samsung NX100.

I have some questions for you!

  1. Is the shutter speed dial easy to get too while holding the camera in shooting position?
  2. Does the shutter speed dial have clicks in between the numbered speeds?
  3. Did you test the aperture ring? Does it have half-stop clicks?
  4. Is the lens metal?
  5. The dial on the rear top-right, is it a wheel or a rocking lever?
  6. How heavy did the camera feel?
  7. Did you hear choirs singing when you looked through the viewfinder?

    8. How would you describe shutter noise? (loud, silent, mechanical...)

I'd call it a slam dunk because it essentially stole the show so to speak. It seems to have gotten the most online buzz of all the announcements, possibly because it was so unexpected as well as it's obvious attractiveness.

we're talking about two different types of slam dunk, then. ymmv, but buzz and hype have dropped off of my radar, having been witness to too many buildup-campaigns in the past. show me a finished, positively reviewed product that outdoes its ever-improving competition in handling and image quality, while remaining competitively priced, and i'll join you in the love fest tent (where i hope they're serving augustinerbrau).

Indeed, however there was no hype campaign or build up. This was announced out of the blue and drew huge attention.
I say well done Fuji for putting in the market research and design consideration into this camera. Their efforts seem to be justified on the amount of interest shown already

Pre-Order prices in the UK are £999 - what we expected. You always hope though :-).

Can somebody clear something up for me, please put me straight if I'm wrong!

There is a red "A" on both the shutter dial and aperture wheel (Oh just saying those two things exist makes you happy, doesn't it?!). If we put the shutter dial to "A", it will act as aperture priority, in that the shutter is automated in relation to the aperture which we change manually. If we put the aperture ring to "A", the aperture is automated in relation to the shutter speed, which we change manually.

Am I way off here? This is just a hopeful guess, looking at the design of the camera.

Seems pretty reasonable to me. Same as many of my old film bofies. Also, setting both aperture ring and speed dial to A would give fully automatic shooting (i.e. P mode).

Just what I was thinking. I notice there isn't a dedicated ISO button/dial... or have I missed it? But there is a 'FN' button on the top plate, which I guess could be used for ISO. Not a massive issue of course, with it having a fast lens. Is there any sort of stabalization in this beast?

Wonder if the US will get it for $999 or if it'll be $1599 based on the currency conversion.

If it works anything like old cameras of the past, I would guess that you are spot on, perhaps even if you put both on A (shutter and aperture rings) you would have a program mode, though I may be off on this.

If you want to see an insane amount of info and speculation on the X100 go to RFF and see the number of posts there!
Lots of people excited over there, as am I.

Looks like they've released pricing for the X100. Photography Blog reporting they've announced £900 for the UK and $999 for the US. http://www.photographyblog.com/news/fujfilm_x100_hands-on_photos/

I really want to buy this camera!

Edit: Hmm. A more recent post reneges on this and suggests that pricing has not been confirmed. Apologies for the false alarm.

I put myself on the list as soon as it was announced, the NEX-3 with 16mm hasn't really impressed me that much so I may ditch it when the X100 becomes available.

Having said that I'm still using a 5D1 and the £900 price for the X100 would go a long way towards a 5D2, hmmm decisions decisions.

I hope this camera lives up to the hype, or there will be a lot of disappointed people.

A) it's not a rangefinder
B) the prototype had no sensor
C) a lot could change.

Saw this link at dpreview today:

Looks cool to me... looking at getting a 35L or ZE35 for my 5D II. The Fujifilm x100 looks like more fun

ymmv, but as someone who bought into the claims of (and was subsequently disappointed by the performance of) u4/3, i'm still not going to get excited about this camera until it

1) materializes,

2) is reviewed thoroughly, and

3) offers t2i image/file quality or better - i.e., enough to justify (among other things) the non-interchangeable mount.

cheers

Aahhh you are too difficult to please...
Me? I'm happy that digital finally catches up with 1970 and offers a compact camera with a viewfinder
Maybe in a couple of decades it will also have an RF and full frame, like an XA.

abam; I hear ya. My venture into regular Fourthirds was a short one. I draw the line at APS-C for sensor size and the only APS-C that pick my interest are the smaller solutions, which could mean reasonably small cameras and compact lenses.

I have good experiences with Fuji over the years so I have some hopes for the concept. If they develop a 28mm model that looks like the X100 (probably a X100W) I don't think I can hold off the temptation.
