I am enjoying the banter on the thread at the moment, however. Nice to hear you're thinking about a second manual focus Nikkor. I was contemplating sending you a package filled with "loaners" just to keep you in the fold...

My NMFAS has been stirred up lately.

I appreciate the offer my friend, but I hate being responsible for things like that. When Nikki made it to me, I guarded her with my life.

Besides the 55 micro what are you looking for? I have some inventory I need to downsize.

Because of some off thread discussion I may have another lens on the horizon.

The only other ones I would be interested in at this time is the 28mm f2.8 AIS and the 105mm f2.5 AIS.

But here's my problem for now. I have already received bills from the hospital totalling over $100,000. So it may be a while before I'm ready for a spending spree.

To be fair, you don't HAVE to have the most expensive Metabones. In fact, you can get some cheap adapters on ebay that will work fine, according to the Angry Photographer.

I bet that's the reason why he's so angry then

I once, what now seems as a long, long time ago, in a universe far, far away (I moved since, met Kristina, became a dad), owned a Sony NEX. Only recently did I think back at that adventure and told Kristina that I would NEVER buy a mirrorless camera again, because...

On that Sony I had a cheap $20 "Made in China" adapter. It took some 2 return shipments, some shimming and some lightsealing of obvious design flaws to get that halfway usable.

There are 2 lenses I'm most worried about when really going this route. The 16mm f3,5 fish eye and the 55mm f1,2 which both lose a lot of their original character adapted to a crop sensor camera. The expensive 0,71x magnification Metabones adapter would save the character of both lenses at the cost of 4 extra glass elements adding distortion, losing sharpness and changing said character. But at the benefit of retaining the field of view and pretty much all of the rendering of both lenses.

The alternative would be buying both a new full frame fisheye and a fast standard lens (which would then be one of the 35mm f1,2 offerings, or Nikons 35mm f1,4 Nikkor-N). In both scenarios I spend around $500. The question remains, where did I spend it best? (This is where you gang say that if I do not yet own the 35mm f1,4, I really NEED one of those, right?)

So, where are those beverages you guys are talking about?

Well now, you are in a pickle. Just the same, you can get away with the one adapter, it's just a little nuisance to keep changing it every time you want to use a different MF lens.

I heard that George is buying it and bringing it to the farm. Better get you ticket and join us!

p.82 #8 · Manual Focus Nikon Glass

Sitting at home with a bit of a rash that makes distracting myself a priority, I reviewed the spreadsheet I'd created some time ago to keep track of lens purchases. On a whim, I decided to add the dates each purchase was made. If you think that is easy, think again. The purchases were made over six and a half years from a variety of sources. Unfortunately, Fred threw out private messages that wiped out some of the history for purchases made through FM. Also unfortunate, is the fact my recent change of computers, which included an upgrade of the operating system, made emails I've kept not readily available. I'd kept a folder I called "Internet Purchases" and another called "E-Bay" into which I dropped emails related to lens purchases. The folders are gone and the emails reside unsorted in a 13 gigabyte folder that is accessible but challenging to utilize.

By searching emails, reviewing photos taken I was able to find the purchase date for all but one lens... one of two 135 f/3.5 Q AI lenses I own. I bought quite a few 135mm lenses and not every purchase was clearly identified so I couldn't get there. I also was unable to find dates for Nikon extension tubes.

After finding the dates, I thought it might be fun to organize the spreadsheet so I'd know purchases made by year... just the sort of stuff every person needs to know, right...

Anyway, indulge me... here is my history of lens purchases since I began this adventure...

2010 - 8 lenses - $1,739.24
2011 - 15 lenses - $4,749.98
2012 - 7 lenses - $1,512.32
2013 - 7 lenses - $1,080.72
2014 - 2 lenses - $375.24
2015 - 3 lenses - $365.02
2016 - 4 lenses - $763.19

I'm pretty certain the second 135 f/3.5 Q AI, which cost a paltry $65.60 was purchased in 2015. I also think the extension tubes and teleconverters that cost a total of $547.39 were all bought in 2011. I was seriously into kit building at that time.

So there you have it. I didn't try to document the two D700s or the Df. As has been noted, we invest in lenses but buy an occasional camera so we can use them...

Now there would be a challenge. I started this manual Nikkor adventure back in 1995, and I did not have email back then.

I know that over the years I bought and sold quite a few lenses. I think that if I gave it some thought, I would be able to puzzle most of that back together to a coherent story

This was the camera I bought in 1995, then for US$200

DSC_5944-Edit by b j, on Flickr

With it came this very 50mm f2 Ai

_DSC8790-2 by b j, on Flickr

Later that year I picked up a Tokina 17mm f3,5. Can't exactly remember what I paid for it, but it was somewhere around US$150

In 1997 I then bought a Nikon FM2 body (the one Kristina uses now), an MD-12, 80-200 f4 (sold in 2015) and 55mm f3,5 Ai micro Nikkor which I still own today

Another 2 years went by where I spent all my money on film and paper, but then I walked past a shop (1999 or early 2000) that had the 200-600 f9,5 zoom Nikkor in it's display. I went in and bought that lens, together with a 135mm f2,8 Nikkor-Q and a Sigma 28-70 f2,8 for Nikon for $450

2001 I met a nice person, sold him a mountainbike and a few weeks later he gave me a Bronica SQAi with 50mm f3,5 PS, 80mm f2,8 and 150mm f3,5. He didn't even want any money for it.

In 2001 Nikon released the D100. I borrowed one whenever I needed a digital camera. That was my kit until 2006 where I traded the Bronica for a Nikon D70s and an SB-600.

In 2008 I found the D70s to be fairly limiting (even though the 1/500th flash sync is still amazing by todays standards) and bought a used D200 for $800, and a few weeks later I bought 2 (yes two) Nikon 14-24 f2,8 zoom Nikkors in a special offer (buy two photography items, get the cheaper one for free). I sold the 2nd lens and spent the money on a 105mm f2,8 VR micro Nikkor, an SB-700 and a new camera bag. That's $1950 spent on a 14-24 f2,8, 105 f2,8 VR, an SB-700 and a LowePro holster bag. Not a bad deal.

Between 2008 and 2010 I bought an 85mm f1,8 AF-D, 70-210 f4-5,6 AF-D and a Sigma 28mm f1,8 EX for $350, $140 and $170 resp.

In 2010 I then sold the D200 for $900 and bought a D300 for $850. I spent the $50 on pizza most likely

With the D300 I also wanted a faster tele lens and I bought a nice 80-200 f2,8 AF-D two ring zoom after trying a 180mm f2,8 AF and 3 Tokina 80-200 f2,8 lenses. Paid $650 for that one.

The Sigma lens started bothering me. It was too big to carry alongside the 14-24 and the 80-200, so I sold it and bought a 28mm f2,8 Ai in 2013. That was the year in which I registered in this forum and started posting in this very thread.

I bought a Sony NEX in 2014. Sold it soon after though. Other purchases in 2014 were a 50mm f1,4 Nikkor-S.C for $100, 105mm f2,5 Ai-S for $100, 105mm f2,5 Nikkor-P.C for $150, a 24mm f2,8 Nikkor-N.C for $140 and a 135mm f3,5 Nikkor-Q for $50. The 135mm Nikkor-Q, 105mm f2,5 Ai-S and the Sony all left in 2014 for about the price I paid for them. To make up for the disapointment of the NEX I bought a Nikon F3 for $140. Sold the 200-600 f9,5 that year as well.

I also sold the 14-24 f2,8 and bought my Nikon D3. Pretty much a straight trade. The most significant purchase of 2014 was the 55mm f1,2 Nikkor-S.C. I loved that lens straight from the start. Paid AU$ 172 for it.

In 2015 my 80-200 f4 Ai-S was sold, along with the 28mm f2,8 Ai. I bought a 20mm f3,5 Nikkor-UD for $28. I further sold the 105mm f2,8 VR because Kristina also owned one and spent the $550 freed on an 85mm f1,4 AF-D. Also bought a 28mm f2 Nikkor-N.C for $100. Sold the 28mm later because it did not focus to infinity, even after adjusting. I also picked up another 135mm f2,8 Nikkor-Q.C for $50 and a 135mm f3,5 Nikkor-Q.C for $75 until Curtis pointed me to a really nice 200mm f4 Nikkor-Q.C which I bought for $140. After the 200mm I bought a 50mm f1,4 Nikkor-S, sold my 105mm f2,5 to Kristian, bought a 105mm f2,5 Nikkor-P Sonnar from Eike, sold my 50mm f1,4 Nikkor-S.C. The 16mm f3,5 for $250 was the last lens purchase of that year.

In regard to cameras, I bought a Nikon F2 in 2015. Paid $200 for the camera, with DP-3 finder and a 50mm f1,4 K series. I gave Kristina the 50mm and we converted it to Ai for her then new D800. I also bought a Nikon FE2 for $33. It came with a 50mm f2 Nikkor-H.C. Sold the Nikkor for $100 and the FE2 for $140. I bought my 1st Nikon F for $140, which turned out to be a red dot F. Nice bonus there.

I was given a Nikon F3 towards the end of 2015. In 2016 I bought another Nikon F for $200. This one came with Photomic finder and a plain prism finder. I sold the camera body for $100, but kept both finders. In th epackage was also a 5cm f2 Nikkor-S.

In April 2016 Nikko visited us, and NMFGAS struck hard. I gave in and bought another 80-200 f4 Ai-S

That's about the time where I lost my job. I have not purchased anything Nikon since, but now that my D3 is failing fast, I am considering selling the D3 and 80-200 f2,8 AF-D to fund the Fuji. The same person that gave me a Nikon F3 also gave me a lik enew 50mm f1,8 Ai-S.

I really should do an updated version of this one of these days:

I didn't list everything I bought and later sold. The research was also a bit confusing because along the way I've bought gear for other people, then shipped it along to them. I bought one lens for David, who has suddenly reappeared. I think I bought one for Jose. Both of those lenses I shipped to them. I bought a 16 f/2.8 AI-s for Chris and carried it with me during a trip to the Netherlands. I also carried a raft of lense and a D700 for Rinie.

The lenses that were tough to nail down were those purchased through private transactions. I bought a 20 f/2.8 U.D. AI from Chuong, a 16 f/3.5 K AI from John and a few lenses locally through craigslist. I imagine you would have some of the same experiences I did, reliving a part of my past. And yes, your journey is a much longer one, and doubtless filled with much more complexity. This one has been pretty focused on this thread and the banter happening here. All good.

Remember Leighton, I sold over $12,000 worth of Canon gear when I made the transition... yes, I'd bought that gear too but as our friend lost in Kansas has said before, moving money from one hobby to another is a reasonable thing to do. Yes, I lost something on every camera I've purchased, but I actually made a profit on the Canon lenses. They instituted a price increase a short while before I decided to sell. I broke even on most things and made a healthy profit on the more prized professional lenses.

I hope there's some medical insurance somewhere in the mix my friend. That number is absolutely scarey to me, though I know a visit to a hospital comes with a high price tag. Good luck sorting it out.

I can appreciate the sentiment Peter... BUT, like John you are very sensitive to weight since you wander off into the mountains from time to time. I could imagine a lightweight mirrorless camera would be right up your alley... or should I say trail.

Of course, battery life for some of these offerings is not that good, which would have a downside for you. Too much to think about for me...

I may be sensitive to weight, but only because I want to bring that big DSLR. I shave the weight off other items, or leave some lenses behind that can be replicated with stitching or cropping.

I cannot see a reason to bring anything I am not 100% familiar with. If I really wanted to go ultra light, I could bring that Nex-6 Sony with kit lens that's laying around at home catching dust. I think I fired off 4 frames on it before my daughter used it, but since she has a new smartphone, that camera hasn't been touched. It's just that I'd kick myself for not bringing the best sensor when that grand scene unfolds in front of me.

Also, cameras that are best used with the LCD in back are extremely difficult to use in bring sunlight when wearing glacier glasses or even just polarized sunglasses. If they are polarized, you can't see anything at all. On the DSLR, I never use live view unless it is absolutely unavoidable even at home. It's just not how I frame images. My brain was trained to see through an optical viewfinder.

I'll be the last one to change systems to save 6 ounces in the backcountry. My DSLR goes hiking with battery grip and I bet the tripod plate on the bottom is as heavy as some Fuji cameras. I need that stuff for various reasons. Once you add it all up, the difference in weight between DSLR and Fuji with adapter and extra batteries isn't worth it leaving a D810 behind. I only bought the D810 for that dual use. For race cars, I could have just kept shooting D600 on the wide end, D500 on the long end.

my recent adventure moving into a more AF capable kit equals about that total. and I am far from done, just cannot justify any additional lens over renting when needed.

Going to sell the 600mm f/4.0 - after the last weekend it has become quite obvious that there's no need for it any longer and I really would like to free up space in that Pelican case it currently occupies.

This concludes an entire page without a single photo post...

one or my least used AIS lenses - 24mm f/2.8 AIS on D810. It does real well wide open, much easier to focus than that broken 28/2.0 I recently tried out. I've owned this lens for about 5 years now, but haven't taken more than 50 shots with it.
