Colin, these were older show cars, current top fuel dragsters generate 10,000 HP nd 7,500 lbs/foot torque.. Engines do not last long at these levels. Weight is 2250 lbs. Runs are 300m in a little over 3 seconds and 300mph.
The airfoil alone generates up to 10,000 pounds of down force. Crazy stuff.
Kind of the end of the digger era there. It wasn't long after that Garlits blew part of his foot off with a bell housing explosion and soon after everyone was following him into rear engine designs. I guess since the rear engines were still in front of the rear axle plane, they are technically still "mid-engine" but it is pretty clunky to call it the 'engine behind the driver' era.
I have a few pics of old drag cars, but non manual focus.
Thanks all for your recent Likes and comments; I've been enjoying the great stuff popping up from others here lately (N.B. the Like button is working fine for me, Mihai). Here are a few more shots from late August at Elk Falls, including two from the 16 f/3.5 Ai and one from the 85 f/1.8 HC.

Kristian,
No wonder they left - long walk from the front door to the outhouse! May have been very tough in the winter time.......
In Montana we can appreciate the difficulty of that!
:-)
Love your shots,
Jack
Thanks Jack!
Yeah, perhaps a bit difficult and perhaps a bit cold sitting there in the winter. Only for short visits....
I guess Montana can get quite cold??
I love finding places like this in the middle of nowhere. There is always an interesting story behind it all. This cabin was located close to the quarry. We used to swim in the pond while we where kids, that 25 years ago and the cabin was there by that time as well. Me and a couple of friends are planning a short camping trip up there perhaps in a months time or so. Not much civilisation around so I guess the place can be quite nice for some starry night shots.

Jay the depth of knowledge you possess amazes me. At first I thought the Zenit Hackers were something like Monty Pythons “holy hand grenade.” But I found that they really exist!
another 16mm f/3.5 AI shot, D810, sitting on a big boulder, self-timer triggered.
This time ISO 3200, since there was plenty of full moon light. This is looking north at Forester Pass and Diamond Mesa in Sequoia National Park, a few hundred yards off the John Muir Trail.
