What a difference a day makes. Now, it looks like Florence is turning further south and will not be as bad for us as they first thought.
George still looks like he's in for it, so hold on buddy!
Yeah, definite shift in forecast the last 18 hours. Will see. I have generator, coffee, chocolate, beer. All essentials checked
and a more all encompassing shot of where this is - hard to get a "clean" shot of the plane with this stuff all around it. You can guess the lens from the finger that made it into the frame at the bottom
I sure hope no one will suffer too much of an inconvenience from this storm.
This time I have a bit of an unusually processed photo. Camera was Kristinas D800 again. Lens, the 80-200 f4 Ai-S zoom Nikkor
After finishing the knife build, I remembered having bought some items to build a key hanger, because Kristina tends to forget where she left her house keys on occasion.
So, with the morning off from work, I fitted the pieces together and realised that I had to process a picture of the key rack in a way that, to me, mirrors the athmosphere found in H.P. Lovecraft stories.
George
I hope you have gas for the gen and bottle water
Propane for the grill and tarps for the roof just in case
Hurricanes are a yearly occurrence for us I believe the are a couple more disturbances out there
My wife keeps watch on the Atlantic while I am gone
Rarely take a vacation Late August-October
So the DDG 1000 is back at sea after 1.5 years of installations. Old photos compared will show the external difference. I will not say more.
Here she is departing 9/11/18
The Navy asked me to take the photos, they went right away to four captains at the Washington yard, and the local officers.
First the tools taken with the iphone. The 800mm had a catastrophic failure. Will discuss later. Both photos are from the 50-300mm, a very underrated lens.
this is the soft mess of a photo I was getting from the 800mm, The first few test shots were sharp, but I am blaming the two hours under hot summer sun for the lens going soft on me, is this true? did the camera focus indicator suffer from the heat? is my D810 damaged? my eye was telling me this was the best focus I could get as well.
I will retest this weekend.
Too bad as the 800mm perspective of a ship is so much more interesting than the 300mm.
Researching a similar issue with my 80-200 f2,8 AF lens I found more then one source quoting that ED glass is the most likely culprit.
It is not magical glass after all. Rather it's the beauty and the beast bundled together in one element. It contracts and expands far more at different temperatures then normal optical glass, however, and that is an indication something might be wrong with your lens, it should still give you sharp results, even if you would have to turn the focus ring a bit further or less far.
So, combined with the ED glass changing, I think your lens does no longer reach infinity when ambient temperatures rise. An adjustment ininfinity focus could be a fix. Maybe

my 800mm was bought in December and fully tested.

Just Tryin to Reason with Hurricane Season
Good luck

Hi Reagan. Thanks. Yep all bases covered. Looks like we are going to miss the brunt of it as it shifts in to South Carolina. Looks like the majority of the people along the coast are taking heed and moving inland. I was in Raleigh yesterday and I-40/I-85 westbound was crazy busy. Lots of boats, campers etc. I saw on the news this morning that all the shelters from Raleigh/Durham east are full and are telling folks to keep moving west. Our church is opening as a Red Cross shelter at 10am this morning to help with the overflow. The problem at the coast and eastern part of the state is going to be storm surge and excessive rain because of the slow movement predicted over the next 3 days.
I had the opportunity to spend some time with a pre production model of the Nikon Z7 and the FTZ adapter. Nikon has really come out with a really good camera. The best part was you can use the FTZ adapter to mount even the pre AI lenses and achieve focus through Focus peaking. In my opinion it's like a DF on steroids.

Rafael. I agree with Buddy. Heat combined with the amplified distortion of shooting through hot air turbulence and especially shooting across water. The 800mm will show it much more than the 300mm end of the 50-300. I have had similar experience shooting down at the coast in the summer. Very good shots early morning then going south as the sun came overhead. Try with a white towel or put on some light colored lens wraps. I went with a light colored camo wrap from McNett. It relieves the heat some, but of course does nothing for the air distortion.
Guess that is why most other brands of super telephoto lenses are white??

Venkat - That is very positive news. Thanks for sharing!
Peter, the SR-71 photos are terrific. Thanks for sharing.
Everyone affected by Florence, be safe.
A much more pleasant and beautiful Tuscan capital that bears the same name. Taken with the X-E1 and Nikkor 50/2 K at Piazzale Michelangelo. It was the first time I packed a manual focus lens on a trip across the pond. On the next visit, suspect the 105/2.5 AIs will be called to duty.
Thanks everyone for the likes. As always, appreciate the encouragement.

This is the kind of news folks on this thread are waiting for... a hopeful sign the Z cameras will play nicely with our favorite lenses. Now for reports from those shooting with the Z6 since the sticker price is so much easier to handle. At that price I'd consider buying new. The Z7 I'd likely wait until the used market softens, which could be a few years from now...

Thanks for the heads up on this.
I think the best value would be the Z6 with the adapter and the new Nikon S 24-70 f/4 lens in case you get the urge to do autofocus video and also it would knock off $400 of the price when bought as a kit.
