I like the bokeh in your image... I actually look for this kind of "bushy" background for some of my images.

I often see bokeh evaluated on its own and separate from the context in which it is used. In your case (bushy?) it adds another layer of information that would not be there if the bokeh were completely smooth and de-focused, like the kind that is often favored in reviews. I think that bushy layer in your image works very well, at least it does for me but perhaps I am not a good judge since I like

Same here Raul. I am a fan of such images as well. I have seen wide angle lens doing a great job in such scenarios that look really pleasing as well.

Here are some examples with the 28mm f2.8 AIS.

Interesting discussion Ram and Raul on having just enough character in bokeh so its interesting, not just a smooth splash of mixed paints in the background.

Here's an example with the 10.5cm f2.5 LTM Nikkor on Leica II, with Rollei RPX 25 film.

Out of focus Federal Hill in the background beyond the water. Federal Hill has quite some history and you can't miss it standing anywhere at the Inner Harbor area of Baltimore.

Looks as though I've missed some interesting conversations as well as some fine photos. Amazingly, I HAVE been taking photos but until this afternoon they languished in Lightroom... a few evaluated, a few processed but not sent to Photoshop for finishing. But today I put on some fine Schubert music and dove into Lightroom.

Ram, I owe you a telephone call and I'll make it in about half an hour... hopefully, you'll be finished with dinner by then. And Laura, thanks for the reminder that Chin is coming to the states and may make a stop in San Francisco. If he does I'd certainly love to meet him in person. I'll send him an email so we can check in with one another.

I've been rambling about with a few different lenses as weather warms up. I hate to report that given so many among us are still contending with that white stuff I vaguely remember is called "snow." So here is proof that while northern California will not compete with southern California with temperatures in the mid-eighties but we did hit 75 today in San Anselmo. I expect Reagan will chime in with a weather report from Florida.

I guess I'll spend some time seeing what I've missed. Thanks for keeping this thread moving along everyone. As I've said often, though I started it, the thread really belongs to everyone who hangs out in the corner of cyberspace. You're doing a great job!

More with early 1950s Nikon lenses.

~1951 Nippon Kogaku 8.5cm f2 PC LTM lens, Leica IIIc (~1943), Rollei RPX ISO25 film, bought and used in 2018.

What you've missed Curtis is that Reagan was trying to spread Fuji rumors about you. Laura and I didn't fall for it though

Nice examples Ram and Saph. Bokeh as seen in your images provides context without competing with the main subject. Here is one where the bokeh is a sort of tunnel to guide the eye...

I'm not one to say never about many things so I'll refrain from saying anything about Fuji, but you can be sure I won't be looking to Reagan for advice on which camera to own. I long ago lost track of how many cameras have come and gone from his hands.

The combination of winter weather, and a bout of flu slowed me down. The flu was only a couple of weeks and not bad but it left me much distracted. Can you imagine watching grown men play snooker? Steve will likely chime in on that one since Brits are into the game big time. I started watching YouTube videos with Ronnie O'Sullivan playing snooker. I have to say, I found it much more entertaining than most sporting events. The skill required to play that game is remarkable. I say that as a person who was a pretty fair pool player in my youth. The few times I played on a snooker table with its acres of green felt and miniscule pockets humbled me. Watching pros I'm pretty much in awe. Major matches are played over multiple sessions and can last days. I find it mesmerizing... or maybe it was the fever...

Tell Reagan when you see him that I'm still DELIGHTED with the Df. If/when they release another version I'll buy that one as well.

Just to prove I remember how... here are three images from the street, all converted in Silver Efex Pro 2. All were shot with the 105 f/2.5 P AI, which was used for many of the images above. I don't mention this fact often since the file names I create always have the lens used in the name. The first two were shot in Berkeley last week and the final photo was shot yesterday in Fairfax during a walk to the library. These folks are enjoying the AMAZING organic ice cream available from a shop that is perhaps ten feet wide. It is always crowded, simply because the ice cream is so good!

A "wild" tomato .....since the fire many odd plants have sprung up all over the place. The seed were no doubt dispersed by the high winds on the day. This specimen is from a plant that grew in a previously uncultivated piece of land near our house. What i find surprising is that it is a beautiful fruit, not the throwback one would expect from the seeds of a hybrid.

Perhaps Leighton can throw some light on this? Definitely a Darwin tomato illustrating survival of the fittest.

Whereas I think that snooker is a skilled game Curtis, I also think that the days long matches they play are a complete waste of time.

So I guess, for my book, your problem was the fever

Glad to see you back and well. Some doctor (male) stated that there is actually such a think as man flu. It had to be a chap to come out with such BS ...... I had a cold for a week, but would never refer to it as flu ..... but flu is a debilitating problem, and the Aussie flu has been going the rounds, so I'm glad your back on track Curtis.

As for Reagan, isn't he off selling his Nikon again, so that he can fund some old red car that he has seen and liked

I'm sure it must be too much heat down in Florida affecting his mind ..... maybe !!

Hi everyone. Im into buying a lens for macro and the 55/3.5 seems to be very sharp and also not so expensive. So, which one of the 55/3.5's should I go for? As far as I understand there is an older P version then the coated P.C and also the later ai-version. I've also seen that there's a k-version out there..
Also, would it be worth going for the 55/2.8 ais version even though it's a bit more expensive? Should add that I'm probably gonna use it not only for macro but for some landscape too.

What you say gang?

You will get every answer you need under the sun .... and some you don't .....

Right here .....

Kristian - for my money and the variety of applications you plan, it would be the 55 f2.8 Ai-s every time.

But that is just my humble opinion .... there will be others !! And there will be good reasons for the others too ....

Confused - oh you will be !!

Steve

Haha! Yes, I know, there will be, NO, there is confusion It's always like that. Everyone have their own experience and opinion about it. The 55/2.8 got vote number one, thanks Steve. Let's see how confused ya'all can make me. Challenge accepted
