I spent some delightful time yesterday listening to Beethoven string quartets while tediously fixing something broken. The turntable is even more vintage than my camera lenses.

Man, all these stereo and LP pictures are going to make me setup my vintage stereo again (it has pieces from the 70's, 80's, and 90's). We moved a couple months ago, but I haven't set mine up yet. I did setup my wife's (hers is all 90's, but "the good stuff"), and currently listening to some Bob Seger while working from home.

Thanks. The equipment may surprise you. It has some history, and a long story so humor me here.

Probably around 1968 I bought a Dynaco tube amp, a pair of AR-4x speakers, and that used Dual 1019 turntable with a cracked dust cover from a small local audio shop where I was at university. I learned later that the turntable had been dropped from an airplane wing while being loaded as checked luggage, that the shop had taken it on trade-in, fixed all the critical stuff and put it up for sale.

Those speakers and amp are in my attic now, unused for 40 years; I may pull the amp out one day. But you see, I spent ten years as an engineer at Lexicon, a Harman-Kardon company, working on both pro and consumer electronics. I developed and wrote the auto-setup and room-correction software for their high-end surround-sound pre-amp MC-12, a $3000 upgrade to a $12,000 pre-amp, and came to appreciate the value of surround-sound if it is set up right, even with cheap speakers. Trust me, if done right S-S is a significant enhancement to any sound system. Eventually I purchased at employee-price a CD player and the cheapest surround-sound-in-a-box that JBL (another H-K company) made, an AVR-125. Speaker design had made big improvements since those old AR-4x's. I also added two cassette decks (only one now), and for a while a reel-to-reel deck. It all got connected digitally to our cable TV feed and a DVD/Blu-Ray player. A few years ago I re-started the turntable. Despite its age and "gravity-test" history it still works like a champ!

Eventually the speakers began to wear out. The sub developed a buzz and got replaced by a second-hand Boston Acoustics from a small audio repair shop near me, a significant upgrade. The surround speakers started buzzing, possibly victims of a full-length viewing of all three LOTR DVD's, so I replaced the main L and R with Cambridge Audio Minx Min22's. The rest is still as it was last century.

So to answer your question, the 5.1 S-S AVR-125 receiver, a Boston Acoustics sub, Cambridge Audio Minx Min22 speakers for main L and R and inexpensive JBL satellite speakers for the center and the two surrounds. We listen with Dolby-Digital for most cable feeds, for DVD Dolby-Digital or Blu-Ray if available, and Lexicon Logic-7 for most stereo sources like the turntable or CD player. It works great! Old-school, not high-end at all. I have to say, that turntable with a good vinyl record sure sounds good.

Wow! I also worked for Harman Kardon and JBL (even BOSE for a while) doing retail sales and in-home setup. I’ve had a few HK AVR’s over the years and my wife’s stereo uses an HK 3350 receiver driving a pair of mid range B&W towers. My surround sound system is Marantz and JBL speakers with a Velodyne 12” sub. My vintage stereo is a Marantz 2015 that my dad bought the day I was born, a Pioneer tray loading turntable (also my dads, from 1983…I restored it myself), and a pair of JBL 4315c’s that I rescued and refurbished from the garbage. Growing up dad had the L100’s, so the 4312’s are very close in sound to what I grew up with. I have what’s left of my parents record collection, and stand to inherit my uncle’s collection hopefully this summer. His collection is about 1000 records, many of them are demos and pressings he got at shows before the bands got big. I hope he still has the 45 where he’s jamming with Credence in Healdsburg back in the 60’s.

Get those ARs fixed or send them to me with the Dual! I love vintage audio as much as vintage Nikon gear. I remember that preamp. We had one in the store with Levinson and Carver amps, through Definitive Tech surround sound speakers and subs. I think the system was $70k.

WOW! I repeat, WOW!

He! The Dual is being used, as my pic demonstrates. I did some work on a Mark Levinson product too. We used to joke that the cheapest way to buy a M-L audio system was to buy a Lexus and throw the car away. I'm not sure about my AR speakers. Something put a dimple in one of the tweeters while it was stored in my mom's house, and the fact that I am now 77 will tell you how long ago that might have been. My amp was an SCA-35, not high power but sweet, running 12AX7's. Your demo room sounds about right. Our demo room had about $90,000 worth of equipment but that included a large projection TV. We could go in in the evenings with friends and watch DVD's, great fun.

The room-correction system I wrote got reviewed by one of the audio magazines, I think Stereo Review but maybe not, along with several other systems. They said it made a small difference and were disappointed until they realize they had put it into the room they had spent the most effort to optimize already, so it made an improvement after all. I ran the beta-test program for it and got email from people around the world. One guy wrote that he upgraded his system (i.e. spent $3000) without telling his wife, and later that evening when they watched a movie she commented on how great the "stereo" system sounded. I remember that note fondly because it made them both happy and apparently worked!

About Bose, um, you do realize, I hope, that Bose and H-K are culturally incompatible, yes? I applied to work at Bose when I voluntarily left Lexicon but couldn't talk my way in. Now I can rest easy that I didn't end up there!

Wow - hobbies combined! Great to see captures of stereo gear taken with Nikkor glass. Love it and many thanks to jimmuller, James Markus and others.

@SiMuMe - ProAc Response 3. Not small by today’s standards, but I got them about two decades ago, before we were married, so my wife ended up taking the whole package — me plus the stereo.

Yeah, I did BOSE before I worked for HK/JBL. This was during your time at Levinson. BOSE was fun, but I only liked a few of their speaker sets. I did put a set of 901's with about 1000w of high current power to them on top of the theater room and would play music and movies through them at ear bleeding levels. Most had no idea how well they could sound with lots of power thrown at them. Not audiophile quality to be sure, but great for party speakers with a sub. Our store had a set of Acoustic Wave Cannons and 6 of the accompanying speakers. When the DJ booth was being torn down, I setup a theater setup with them on the main stage and played Jurassic Park on loop through that setup. 20,000w total power with a frequency range between 16Hz-21kHz. Needless to say, I sold a lot of stereo and home theater systems after people got to hear what a good system could sound like.

When Incredible Universe was bought out by Fry's Electronics, everything was priced at cost or less. I missed an open box ML 2-channel amp by about 2 minutes. I had it stashed away and someone who worked there found it. $7000 marked down to $500 (back in 1999 or so). I was livid. I did get the HK3350 NIB for $50, and have had it since then.

I usually was in the room under them when the 901’s were going. The big theater setup, I had musician earplugs. My ears are far better than my eyes at this point. I made it to the final rounds of interviews to work for the THX division of ILM…I missed out by one point. I have a slight dip in my hearing at about a higher pitched woman’s voice…about a 20db dip, and at the time you needed 19db or less. Sigh…

All,
Great stories and images of vintage hi-fi kit.

Kevin,
My hearing system has an in-built, 'intermittent', 60dB, wideband, reject filter around those frequencies you mentioned.
Often gets me into trouble....... not sure why.

One of the most interesting pages in the thread. Speakers. I love a good sounding speaker. Bonus point if it also has high WAF. At one point I may have had as many speakers as I have cameras now . Then I reached the "you can only listen to one pair at a time" stage. I've almost reached the same with cameras. However, last time I had to decide between a pair of speakers and a camera(2023), the Zf lost and I've never been happier. Could have just found my last pair of speakers.

ProAc Response 3. Lovely looking floorstander. I see you have some kind of snake on the back of them, too . Thank you very much for sharing. If I had a big room, I'll grant myself license to go shopping again and I'll be a happy man.I've been craving a pair of Revel Ultima Salon2's for a while.

Amazing what Jim and Kevin have been up to. Those are very interesting stories. Lexicon kind of lost their way after you left Harman, Jim.

Thanks. BTW, I had to look up the WAF acronym. Haven't encountered it before!

You are right about Lexicon. They had lost their managerial way before I left, one of reasons I left.

Now, we are supposed to be talking about devices to create something we can see, not something we can hear. Which brings this back around to MFNG. My sweetie and I played a music festival this past weekend and got a chance to visit with an old friend who had been in our band several decades ago. In the past he has been an avid photographer, amateur and semi-pro, mostly shooting artsy b&w, all on film, for different kinds of jobs. So we got to talking about cameras. His preferred is a Leica M4-P. I mentioned how I wasn't sure what to do with my beloved Nikkormat. Then he offered me all his Nikon stuff he will never use again. The next day he sent me this list and we settled on a nominal price:

Nikon F2 Body, 8052369 (1980) w/DE1 non-metered plain prism finder. Camera needs light seal replacement, I’m including a kit for that—it’s easier than it seems. There is a strange blur in the prism, but it shouldn’t hamper your fun.
Nikon F Photomic FTn Body, 7304441 (1973) metered finder 664315 (good luck finding batteries for it… it took mercury coin batteries, there are adapters available online if you wish (I always used a handheld meter or just guessed). Nice working condition except speeds below 1/8 get stuck. You can turn the shutter knob and the mirror will snap back into place.

All the lenses are non-AI, ...
NAI Nikkor S, 50/1.4, s/n 876511 (Nippon Kogaku)
NAI Micro-Nikkor, 55/3.5 s/n202147 (Nippon Kogaku) (Nice Lens!!)
NAI Nikkor H-C, 50/2 s/n 2204333
NAI Nikkor H, 28/3.5 s/n333501 (Nippon Kogaku) an old and very cool lens!
NAI Nikkor PC 105/2.5 s/n 507253 w/reversible hood... Its macho speaks for itself!

Filters
52mm Y48 yellow Nippon Kogaku
52mm L39 Skylight
52mm Close up #2
52mm Polarizer
52mm Tiffen Polarizer

And a book to nerd out on
("Nikon F Nikkormat Handbook Of Photography", Cooper & Abbott)

Plus he "may throw in a old Luna Pro meter" which also uses an obsolete battery.

I haven't looked up the SN's yet but the lenses appear to be of similar vintage to what I already own. Edit: By the SN's the lenses are generally older than mine, so there may be a rendering difference, not that I would notice. His 50 f/1.4 is the same as I bought with my Nikkormat, when the 50 f/2 was the cheaper alternative. I wouldn't know what to do with three 50's plus two 55's. His 105 is a PC, interesting if only for the experience. The 28 is a FL I have never experienced but could have used ages ago. I suppose I could put two 50's and a 55 on the film camera bodies, leaving one 50 to swap onto the Z when appropriate.

As for the bodies, such an embarrassment of riches which aren't very useful! While I'd been thinking about my Nikkormat and film and meter battery, two more bodies drop into my lap, functional but flawed. I could put different films in them. Attempting to fix the F2 might be fun. I'm not sure about the filters.

So I ask you kind folks what I should do with everything. Lens selection? Film? What meter batteries do you use?

Do I turn left or right, or just go straight? I am lost at sea.

So first a note, sorry to disappoint, but the 105 PC is not perspective control. It refers to penta – five elements and coated, meaning it’s a later non AI lens. Still a great lens with basically the same optics as the later AIS.

To the rest of your questions, the answer is obviously to use it! If you don’t want to mess with developing, I like Ilford, XP two as a C 41 process black-and-white that you can take to any lab and have them develop. I’ve always been tempted to shoot and develop my own black-and-white, but never have the time or space for the chemicals, etc. That said if you want to dive in, that’s always sounded like a worthwhile endeavor.

I personally would be thrilled to have an F2 drop into my lap: It is a mechanical gem, and as yours comes with the non-metering DE-1 finder, you don't have to fight with adapting a modern battery to it. Replacing the seals should be easy. The shadow on the finder is probably corrosion/delaminating of the mirroring on the prism, so not much you can do about it. The Close-up #2 filter is high quality and fun to play with, giving you a +3 diopter (magnification), but I personally prefer to use extension tubes. Otherwise (personally) not being a nifty-fifty guy, and already having my wide and 105mm lenses, I would sadly treat most of this kit as just "more stuff", and probably try to find another home for it.

Before you start your film journey watch the movie "Tampopo" about the perfect Japanese ramen bowl, and the perfect Japanese omelette. It is good to get in the right mood for these things. There are many new b&w, and colour films out today, and even chemistry developers based on vitamin C. There is also a single bath process called D96 - everything in one solution for black and white. However, exploring is half the fun - enjoy
