Will do my best. Getting to the location is easy, I drive by it everyday. Getting the fog to coincide with my driving by to hide the background will be the challenge.

"Dueling" woodpeckers. Taken with the 180mm f2.8 Ais. This is a very heavy crop. Thanks for looking.

Scott,
Super capture. Not surprising, but Barb makes great seed cakes that draw birds from everywhere. It seems to cause a feeding frenzy whenever she puts a new batch out. And though both woodpecker species show up - I have never seen them this close to each other. That is either a small Red Belly, or a large Downy. Around here the Red Bellies are about 15-20% larger than the Downy Woodpeckers.

What adaptor is best for Ai-S lenses? Is the FTZs or any third part. I'll only be using it with MF and would like to record non cpu data as I do with DSLRs.
I went with the FTZ2. It is a tiny bit smaller than the original FTZ (no tripod mount). I mainly went with it so when I have my lens selected in the non-CPU lens register, the lens data will show in the images EXIF data. It also allows me to use F-mount AF glass (that has a built in focusing motor) if I ever desire. Z-mount glass is often very pricey.

How does one make a seed cake? We have a feeder on our patio and it only lasts about 2 days on a fill up, with shells littering the floor everywhere.

FYI, the FTZ will allow recording the focal length and maximum aperture that the user manually sets in the menu. There is no adapter that will record the actual set aperture on the lens (this seems like it would be really easy to implement with an aperture feeler but that's a different conversation). I am using an FTZii, due to it's smaller size.
FWIW, I have a generic adapter that does not allow a really ancient Nikon 5.8cm f 1.4 to mount at all, but it mounts fine to the FTZii.
Anyone else having issues with getting notifications about thread replies? Even though I have checked the email notification box, I haven't received a thing since the new site updates dropped.

Thanks Jim.
We are lucky and have Downy, Red Belly, and Hairy all visit our feeder on a regular basis. This was the first time we have seen both the male Hairy and the Red Belly at the feeder at the same time. Our Downy's are much smaller than either the Red Belly or Hairy.
Tell us more about the seed cake recipe.
Thanks
Scott
Hey Thanks Scott. I did not know about Hairy woodpeckers at all. They literally are look-a-likes except for bill length, and usually a bit larger than the Downy.
"Midwest wild bird mix" She gets it at Blain's or a local hardware store - lots of sunflower seed, peanuts, dried fruit etc), two packets of gelatin, 1.5 cups water, and a tablespoon of honey. Mix it up and press it into molds. She has two different size molds that correspond to the cages we own. When she heads out to hang em - she's a rock star!
Edit
She told me more on the way to the Secretary of state - She bought from the thrift shop, used Corningware cermic/glass baking dishes for her molds. She uses a large plastic mixing bowl full of the seed mix-water-honey, and pre-bloomed gelatin. Stir it up and put it into the mold AFTER FIRST LINING THEM WITH SARAN WRAP. Otherwise you will never get them out of the containers. She also puts weights on them while they set.
All the talk of the 105/2.5 made me get mine off the shelf for a quick walk after work today. Finally got a little snow.
Re: focusing, mine is butter smooth. These snapshots were on the medium format Fuji 50S and it really covers that sensor very well. Shot 5x4 mode but even 4x3 it only has a hint of vignette in the corners.
Minimal processing in Lightroom and Fuji Pro Neg Hi profile applied.
Thanks for the thoughts Jim, these are RAWs, these days I generally convert on an iPad Pro M4. The grey band you mention is what first caught my eye, changing WB you can watch it move across the boundary of warm/cold colors. But the gradient from light to dark blue was also significantly smoother in the Adobe image. Not expecting perfection but was surprised the issues with the Camera Standard.

Matt, I see some banding in both. Top image has some in the gray to blue transition between the golden globes. Bottom image has some between the light and dark blue. There may be a factor you are not considering - the monitor. Most LED monitors can not even cover the full srgb palette - even when they claim that they can. If you really want to check - find an old cathode tube monitor (they all can do billions of colors. Another factor can be editing that causes image damage. The camera shoots in trillions of colors. See if a SOC jpg has any of the banding. Do you shot jpg or raw?

Just for clarity, the FTZ and FTZII are the only adapters that will record the Non-CPU info in the image, though as pointed out nothing will record actual aperture as the feeler is absent (you get focal length and max aperture).
Generic adapters will not allow for the recording of Non-CPU lens data which is IMO a stupid decision on Nikons part but one that seems unlikely to change.

Thanks for the link, i did read that whole article. I think now playing with the lens for 2 days and taking a lot of photos, I'm going to sell it. I find the images ok looking, nothing fantastic, the bokeh is ok, but nothing special, and the biggest thing is the overall rendering is nothing special to me. It's a pretty good lens but i dont see what the hype is all about this lens. I'm looking i guess for more character in a lens, creamy bokeh, and something special, and if its ok i will sell it and try a few other lenses i have been eyeballing. Thanks for all the help. If anybody is interested in the lens 105mm f2.5 ai it will be in the for sale section, its in mint condition.

I'm interested in the 105 mm F 2.5 AI I know it's like took the world's most famous picture of the Afghan girl and all of that but I'm getting like mixed people telling me different things on different forms about this lens some say it's sharp wide open some say it's not.
I'm wondering people that own this lens on here or have used it what is your take on this lens it seems to be like legendary I'm definitely ready to pull the trigger on one I just want to hear from a few more people on it thanks guys....Show more →
i agree, medical “care” in this country is awful and the shortage of medical personell willing to subject themselves to it will eventually force something to change. a lot of the staff here in rehab is from out of country. one nurse is here from phillipines via dubai. i have been enjoying all the culture.

BTW, the reason I've not been posting lately is that I was diagnosed with cervical spine degenerative disease last November. That explains the pain and other symptoms that have been increasing for some time. Referrals from my primary care physician have been essentially useless other than the diagnostic X-rays and MRI. I've been waiting almost 4 months to see the pain management clinic. My appointment was cancelled last week, and I was told that it would be at least another month before any appointments are available. The specialists dealing with actual treatment options are not even taking appointments until May, so 6 months waiting to even schedule something.

I was wondering if nippi returned to you. i didnt get much of a chance last summer to play, then the fun of passing on to Glen. Then Canada Post system went on strike so nothing going in or out from US.i’m guessing glen saved my material for sending on (like i do) although i added a priorty mailing box to keep the smaller intact for the international journey. i see too many smushed boxes at work and canonly imagine the fun at customs processing.

Then it isn't really there - your display just makes it look like it is. Bet you a cup of Joe that when you print it - it doesn't show up at all.
Since I can - I did another test of what you can do with a MF Nikkor on a modified TC-16a. I reversed the 28mm f2.8 ais with the BR2 ring - then slapped on the BR3 ring for a hood - plugged that onto the TC & the D800 tethered to my computer to stack 221 images of granulated sugar. Everybody needs some sugar - some time.
