Love that Jeep, Glen, and the spiderweb grill.

Hi Reagan, best wishes for riding out the storm inland. Hope the eyes continue to improve as well.

Kevin, glad to hear some good news on your health.

Nice comparison of the Z muffins and the Nikkor S's, George. I'm sure there's an optical comparison post coming soon.

That deep end's got some nice shiny objects, Rafael. Congrats.

That 105 looks very pristine, Jim. Can't wait to see some shots from your capable eyes.

The 180 does BIF, if only for the common Canada Goose. Need to figure out an effective way to mitigate the LoCA from the 180 when shooting over water. My efforts in LR only are not too successful.

Owe you a beer Alan

Oh yeah, you mentioned getting a M to Z adapter. I recommend a Rayqual adapter. Cost more than most, but cheaper than a Novoflex. Made in Japan, rear baffle, great construction. I also use their Nikon S to Z and

I'm going to keep this one in mind George. I only have one M lens so I haven't decided if I realllly want the adapter. I'll take you up on that beer if we ever make it out to NC.

There is an Amedeo adapter Leica S to M and I have one. Mainly for adapting the internal bayonet mount 5cm/1.4

But because it is rangefinder coupled, it has the same focus range as a native Leica lens. Also the 3.5cm f/1.8 Nikkor is not compatible with it because the diameter of the rear element interferes with the rangefinder mechanism.

I really would not use these lenses for macro anyway but for the rare occasion when I would like to focus closer having a close filter in the bag is convenient.

AdaptedLenses wrote:
Isn’t there an S to M adapter though? Or am I thinking of Amadeus that was direct to E?

Probably would if I could really see me using it that often. Maybe something really crazy will drop in my lap, who knows. I decided to force myself to shoot each and every lens I own in July/August this year just to use it and not have it sit as I tend to have my favorites but don't like having gear I don't use. Still have a couple more to go.

leighton w wrote:
That's how I feel about having gear I don't use too.

I am of two minds about this subject. On the one hand, there were really three reasons why I sold off all of my AF lenses, which were, a) that they were getting no use, b) that there was a fair bit of cash tied up in them, and 3) they created a visual distraction from the MF lenses that I was using and some confusion in my mind regarding the purpose of the camera bodies I had in my photo gear cupboard. This perspective is in keeping with what you have said, Ray and Leighton.

On the other hand, the fact that an MF lens has not received recent use does not on its own, for me, constitute enough of a reason to sell it. If I really like what the lens can do and intend to use it periodically, or if I otherwise foresee using it in some future circumstance, I tend to hang onto that lens. Now, I don't have such a huge number of lenses that there are very many that sit unused for a long time, nor are any of the ones I have worth many hundreds or thousands of dollars. If there were a whole lot of them cluttering my cupboard, it would likely lead to a degree of uncomfortable confusion. If I had a pile of money tied up in them, I would feel some pressure to either use them or sell them. But, as it is, the amount of curating I do with my humble collection is pretty limited. (I ended up withdrawing some of the lenses I recently listed in the B&S forum, because they were drawing insufficient interest at prices that were as low as I could afford to sell them at. I believe that I will eventually find them useful, and they are not causing clutter.)

For today's image post, here are a few photos in the visible spectrum, all taken at the Coombs classic car show with the 5.8 f/1.4 S.

A couple of shots of tricolor sage with the 55/1.2 SC that Curtis graciously sold to me some months back. First shot at f/1.2; second at 1.4. Loads of residual spherical aberration. As is common in fast normal lenses, OOF highlights have harsher edges wide open than stopped down even a little bit.

Just an update.
Went to the hospital this morning for a check up. The good news is that the lymph nodes were clean, which was quite a relief. The less good news is that there are already some cancer cells outside the prostate. Too little at the moment to do anything about it. Check every 3 months for the time being. If necessary, I will be irradiated. In 40% of cases this is not necessary. So far so good.

Let's hope it stays that way Chris. Fingers crossed for Curtis and his teeth, Rafael and his eyes, Leighton and his liver etc etc etc !

On another note, just ordered a 135/2.0 AI (AI has a larger rotation for more accurate focusing, 270 degrees IIRC) and a 105/1.8 ais off ebay.

I thought I knew who to blame but that list suddenly got longer once Laura went on her spree !

(BTW - have you printed that pic of the church I took yet Laura? Inquiring minds etc.! Remember our deal, I sent you the file on condition that when you printed it posted a pic of it on your wall on here)

I have lots of lenses I don't use, I just like looking at them. Then selling them cos I don't use them/need the cash. Then buying them again. Then selling them again. etc. !

Silly really as I rarely use anything between 28mm and the 180ED. Maybe I'll use them on the GFX though ?

I would have bought an 85/1.4 but for the outrageous price of them too even though I have an 85/1.4 AF-S version

Look what I've done! Someday, but not quite yet. I'd like to get a long lens (be it the 500) or a 100-400Z before spring when our state is a burned up piece of toast and all the songbirds are out in force again, but not many opportunities exist for using it right now.

I wasn't aware of those differences. Bridge by itself is extremely fast. In your version of Lr when you do an "About" does it mention Camera Raw version right next to Lr version?

I handled storage myself with multiple NAS that I built. 20gb is plenty of cloud storage for me.

My rant was about subscription versus one and done software. I decided I may not live long enough to learn some new program as well as I already know Ps and Lr after almost 35 years using Photoshop/Adobe products. I changed my mind about software subscriptions - realizing I could spend three years worth of subscription on some new program that really isn't as good.

AdaptedLenses wrote:
There are some nuances though between Lightroom CC an Lightroom classic. If you get the CC / Mobile only version you can’t use Canera Raw as a standalone in Bridge, which I was unpleasantly surprised to learn. On the flip side their cloud storage is pretty well priced compared to most easy consumer apps (AWS and the like could probably be cheaper, but more config work).

Lightroom Classic has the same version Camera Raw used with PS, only they've renamed and moved some of the sliders.

Many recent updates to these tools are phenomenal, and it costs $10 / month to stay current.

I remember what a huge expense PS6 was, and it was rendered obsolete by the subscription model.
I think the Photography Plan is an amazing bargain.

I am on vacation for a week, but am delaying our trip to the Carolina mountains by a day or so to allow the remnants of the hurricane to blow through. It gives me an extra day to decide on what to throw in my backpack. I am going with all rangefinder adapted glass for my Nikon kit. I haven't done that before, so I have to make sure I have all my adapter plumbing ready. Nothing worst than getting on the trail and not being able to use something. And I am double-checking to make sure I have my memory cards

Looking at James' post about the 105s made me decide to throw in the 10.5cm LTM version just in case I need something longer.

While packing today, I decided to take a quick shot of it. Built in tripod mount too

Again using the Micro-Nikkor 55/3.5

George

PS6 may not be current, but I wouldn't call it "obsolete." I've been using using it for years, and it still does everything and more than I need. I don't doubt that the updates are "phenomenal." I just question whether I need them and could justify the expense. So far I have refused to capitulate to Adobe's subscription business model. BTW, I started using PS with v.2 and migrated to newer versions as the were introduced. If I can keep my present hardware functioning, I don't plan on moving to a newer version.

For what it's worth, I'm using CaptureOne v.12 for Z6 RAW conversion since LR6 doesn't support Z6 NEF files. For Df RAW files I use both LR6 or CaptureOne.

I'm not criticizing anybody else's choices. I've just found what works for me.
