Mine is one of the later AI-S models with a lens number 942xxx and that is near the end of its production run.
It is of the 5/4 variety. I even had it CLA'd a few years ago. Maybe it is the focal length but I just don't get as many keepers when I use it.

I bought a pre-AI 135mm f/2.8 a few years ago with the 4/4 formula.
I wasn't expecting much, especially because I don't use the range 50-200mm, but I was quite impressed with the results.
Subsequently I bought an AF, a f/3.5 and a f/2, so I am surprised at the poor reports coming from users of the f/2.8 posted lately.
I see there are a number of optical revisions that might account for some variations, and I have confined my explorations to the visible spectrum.
I have a 58mm Leitz "Rot Dunkle", literally dark red, passing around 690nm, comparable to Wratten 87 so I might explore the old f/2.8's performance in near IR.
It is not a favorite focal length but it would be interesting to see what it does on a modern sensor.
Here are the mandatory Friday night Cruising grand photos, this time it was European car show, mostly relatively common German and British cars. I do appreciate them, my own car being rather common, and any old car needs love.
There were some Jewels, a Ferrari, first time ever at this little town, and a real AC Cobra. So real my photos were added to a 427 Cobra gallery.
I was having trouble with the light, extremely bright on the buildings with the cars in the shadows, the Z6 sensor handles this well, my professing not so much.

Moving on from Duncan, which is to the south of me, here are a few photos from the show in Courtenay, to the north. These were all taken with the 20 f/3.5 UD on my Fuji X-T4 with the assistance of the Lens Turbo II focal reducer. Credit for the processing goes, as usual for my monochrome images, to Lightroom Classic and Silver FX (from version 6 of the Nik collection).
Colin, great IR images of London. Really like the HMS Belfast.
Leighton, your sunflowers are way ahead of ours. Nice captures.
Steve, nice work with the 25-50. I had this lens and really liked it, but in a moment of weakness sold it. At least it went to another member of this thread.
My substitute for the 25-50 is the 28-50. It is sharp but does not have the richness to the colors that the 25-50 does, at least to my eye. These were taken with the 28-50 recently. Thanks for looking.

Glen, love you compositions with the wide angle. I took an 18mm Friday, but was less that pleased with my photos. Methinks taking two focal lengths is too much, must take only one.
