Jim, congrats on your new ride and its power to get you out in nature to nourish your soul!
Leighton, Rafael said it just right; you are a true artist of produce photography!
I've been appreciating and learning from the various responses to my IR posts, while also having some semi-philosophical thoughts about the subject. It seems that, for most if not all of those who have shared their preferences, the false colour that enhances reality is well-liked, but the false colour that is obviously a departure from reality can perhaps be a bit jarring. Interestingly to me, the black and white renderings are unanimously preferred over the obvious false colour renderings, even though they are arguably just as much of an abstraction of reality as each other. I have the sense that this might be because we are accustomed to black and white images (as well as black and white films, etc.) due to their ubiquity over many decades, and because they leave the issue of colour entirely up to the imagination of the viewer rather than imposing just one limited option (which would be preferred only by a smaller subset of viewers who happened to like that particular option).
Be all of this as it may, my preference is generally for black and white; but I, too, liked the first false colour image that I posted and I am intrigued by the range of possibilities for the discerning and moderate use of false colour, either on its own or in combination with grey scale, based on the feeling that the choice made can bring to the viewer.
Here are two renderings of another image, also shot with the 50mm f/1.2 Ai-s. The colour version is very similar to that first false colour image that I posted, and that I, too, very much liked---just not as much as the monochrome version. In the case of the image below, I definitely like the false colour rendering, but I unequivocally prefer the grey scale rendering (by the way, the black and white version was achieved by putting the false colour version through Silver Efex Pro; so there is a definite role for false colour, even if it is not the end game). Once again, I would love to hear what you folks think about them, and also what you think about the reasons why most of us seem to share similar preferences....Show more →
Thanks for the kind words. You said here "Be all of this as it may, my preference is generally for black and white; but I, too, liked the first false colour image that I posted and I am intrigued by the range of possibilities for the discerning and moderate use of false colour, either on its own or in combination with grey scale, based on the feeling that the choice made can bring to the viewer." This expresses my view as well.
