This place has been thriving with great photos lately, I must say. Thanks to all of you who keep this thread so photographically fresh and diverse!
I, too, have been fairly busy with my camera and MFNG lately, and I've realized that I typically have three purposes when I go out with my photo gear. One, of course, is to enjoy this often immersive form of photography. The second is to get some good aerobic exercise. And the third is to do the first two things in a beautiful natural environment. As a result, sometimes the photography takes precedence and the amount of exercise I get is relatively limited (due to the amount of time that passes while I take pictures), and at other times exercise takes precedence and the amount of attention I give to photography is limited, and consists mainly of more hastily taken images. The decisive factors that seem to determine which takes precedence is a combination of the quality of the light, the novelty of the location, how photographically inspired I feel in that environment at that time, and how much energy I have available for the twofold focus of attention.
On the other hand, I have also been learning how to find inspiration in familiar environments (this usually involves slowing down and looking with fresh eyes, and may also involve going to a familiar place at an unfamiliar time of day or in atypical lighting conditions), and how great it feels to get out with my gear and get some exercise, even if my photographic results are relatively limited. I have also been going on more adventurous trips to entirely unfamiliar places, to help with gaining fresh eyes for the familiar places.
On that note, here are a few images from Botanical Beach, south of Port Renfrew on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The beach got its name from the intertidal pools in which anemones, trilobites, crabs, tiny fish, clams and other interesting critters live. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a way to make any of these marine gardens seem particularly photogenic. However these four photos should give some idea of the general environment of Botanical Beach. The first shot was taken with the 16 f/3.5 Ai fisheye, and the next two were shot with the 35 f/1.4 Ai-s, and the fourth photo was taken with the 85 f/1.8 HC....Show more →
I second your observations Glen, photography immerses me in my environment, that is almost the true purpose for me, not the end photograph per se.
