Does anybody have experience with using a 2x tele converter with an 85/1.4 AI-S? This lens is sitting on an A7R3, so I would have the choice between a Sony or a Nikon 2x converter. I am trying to figure out how much character such a combo would have at its optimum aperture at infinity.
I do not have any experience with that specific combo, but you would need the Nikon TC-201 converter. They were made for the shorter primes. I have the TC-301 and just confirmed that it will not mount my 85/1.4. The TC-301 optics penetrated into the lens when mounted and the rear element of the 85/1.4 would prevent that. The TC-201 has recessed optics.
The TC-201 is for primes wider than 300mm, TC-301 for 300mm and above.
But from my experience you always lose quality especially with a 2x TC. If your budget allows, the Nikon 180/2.8 in any version would be an outstanding option in that focal range. Just my $.02

I already have the Apo-Telyt-R 180/3.4 for when I want uncompromising quality. I was thinking of having the 85/1.4 AI-S + 2x as a character combo when I don't feel like hauling the 180/3.4 with me. But perhaps the combo has too much character given the price point?

This couple were at the Trevi fountain and obviously wanted to throw coins in the fountain but didn't have any coins. I assume they're American, who else would be so cashed up as to want to throw 50 euros in.

I'm loving it for the seemingly happy lady. The masks don't help.

Understatement of the month. Even your 28 has many lonely days and nights nowadays, because of the fisheye. Heck, it doesn't even make it to touristy places.
The Apo-Telyt 180 is a sweet lens, so is the Nikkor 180 2.8, the AIS as well as the P version, with the last one possibly less sharp.
I haven't used the Apo-Telyt recently, but from what I can remember about it, adding a 2X tele to the 85 1.4 may bring you possibly closer to the weight of the Leica, if not the length. Now that I wrote that, I did a very quick lookup of the Apo-telyt weight, its 750g. The Nikkor 85 1.4 is 620g, and once you add the tele-converter, you really haven't saved on weight.

Hard to believe that this was taken around 6pm on a busy Friday evening.
No busses, traffic, or people getting in the way of the shot.
I lucked out with the solitary figure in the foreground.
Colin - those night shots are wonderful. I couldn't, wouldn't, pick a favourite. Amazing rendition with the 24mm. But I've got to say, the shot of Her Majesty's is perfect, and as you say, unlikely to be repeated, well, here's hoping anyway.
Leighton - that QC version looks good, but that means buying ANOTHER lens....... by the way, we wouldn't consider that pizza here, that's a quiche to us. Still, now that you're inviting us, I'd happily take a a slice.....or two.

Lovely photos, as usual Colin. The night ones are so full of colour. I always wonder about the London night scene ones if you just hop on the tube when the sun sets and say see you later?

Another great one. This thread may not be good for sales of new Nikon lenses.
A super light lens with good image quality improvement stopped down a bit. I'm always on the lookout for a nice midrange zoom to mount to the Df without making it awkward to handle. Lots of primes, not much zooms in this era.
