JimB did the file down and it looks like I can focus almost a millimeter away from infinity.

I've seen images of a filed down retainer ring on the lens (think I posted one earlier in this thread). How does a filed mirror look like, and how would you carry it out? I heard that this is sometimes needed for use of C/Y lenses.

Jim, lovely bokeh studies. And the tree is art.

So how does swedish winter look like?
This winter is crap, we had less than 24hs of snow and it didn't freeze any longer than maybe 2 or 3 days. In 2010 we had 4-5 weeks of snow and it was below 0° celsius all the time.

The Stockholm winter anno 2012 it's dismal. Here are some 5D2 Rokkor 58 @ 1.2, note the puny snowflakes. Sry for bigsize, I'm just enjoying my newly acquired payed membership at Flickr :-)

This thread is going really well! Love the shots wfrank! I have just ordered a 5D2 and cannot wait for it to arrive. My 58 1.2 has been in the cupboard for at least 2 months now... Focusing it with my 1Ds2 is just too difficult without liveview, I didn't really enjoy using it to be honest as I had no idea what was in focus, and results on my laptop showed that 90% of them were indeed out of focus.

Hopefully I can get back on the wagon of getting out with my camera now I have a much lighter and easier alternative than a 1D body.

Thanks!

And congratulations on your new camera! Personally I could not do without the Canon EG-S matte (~25€). My mirror hits above 5m so then I'll go LV (but a fiddly handheld version of it). Also, my copy just barely focus on infinity, none of these problems come with a 1Ds2? Or perhaps you have a better conversion.

Looking forward to see more from you, which seem likely to happen quite soon then :-)

Nope. the 1ds2 is problem free with all of my lenses. Lets hope my Contax 35 and rokkor are fine on the new camera. I filed the retaining ring worryingly close so hopefully it will clear!

Its easy. just use masking tape to cover the element. file carefully the top quarter of the ring and blow the filings off gently. just keep stopping and checking how much meat is left so you don't go through the metal!

i would definitely remove the retaining ring before filing it. i'm not a fan of accidentally destroying lenses that will never be made again.

I've been looking around for a smallish 35-60mm to go between the Oly 24/2 and Summicron-R 90 in my NEX kit. I considered the Canon 35/2 LTM and the Summicron-C 40, both of which I've had before and liked, but I've resisted RF lenses because I know I'll want the Hawkes adapter to go with them, and once I have that I'll start asking questions like, "Wouldn't it be cool to use this with a Summicron 28 ASPH?" And then the bottomless pit opens up beneath my bank account and I go broke buying lenses actually built for a system

i have this lens too ($5 plus $4 for shipping). i very much like the color and draw and it is plenty sharp in the center. i don't like the long mfd and my copy at least sucks in the corners on aps-c (sucking is of course a comparative thing – it sucks compared my other rokkor normals). i hardly ever use it except on film when i want to go small. on my NEX i use the contax 45/2. i keep looking for a reasonable rokkor-m though.

Yeah, as infatuated as I am with it (mostly because the size and price are impossible to beat) I know the long MFD will eventually be a frustration. The corners don't bother me, but I agree they aren't perfect. So it won't be the last lens I look at, but it may have changed the direction. I was hesitant about the G 45 because I'm not fond of the focusing experience with the adapters, and equally hesitant about the OM 50 because of the structured macro bokeh. Now I'm thinking a 58 might be just right.

Good luck finding a decently priced Rokkor-M. The price I've seen on those is getting equal to their C counterparts, but I'm sure one will pop up eventually.

Someone's getting a nice Rokkor 58/1.2, Good luck with the sale.

I would get it as a 2nd copy if I didn't have a list of lenses I want ahead of it.
