Well, I just spend a few minutes with the lens. If I like the lens it's easy to remember how much rotation I need for how much movement. This works except for macro or lenses with a really short focusing ring throw. I'm usually better (faster) than AF mechanisms anyway. The fact that I'm on a 2:1 crop sensor and looking thru a hi-res EVF might help a bit too.
