The Hickspodisc in something I came up with like the Expodisc , I use a filter material that is used in respirators. It's used the set a Custom WB in the cam for any lighting conditions. According to Jack Flesher It's within 1/3 stop of 18% gray. and as he say's it's close enough.

I've been thinking about making something like this, I've just been using toilet paper and it's been doing the trick but holding it over the lens just looks stupid, haha.

Hey Tom! My version of the HickspoDisk works well. The shots I posted today (flowers in Nature & Wildlife forum) were the first I've gotten to do using the "disk". Instead of using a polarizing filter ring with the glass from a UV filter in it, I used a 77mm UV filter, respirator material, and a 77-something Step-up ring with the acrylic diffusion material super glued to the front. Looks good. Works better. Thanks for your help.

What were your setting for this photo? Mine seem to come out too dark.
Thanks

Pardon my ignorance on the subject, but what materials did you use to make the alternative disk? I can't seem to bring myself to spend a few hundred dollars to outfit all of the different size lenses I have with expodiscs if there is a cheaper alternative that provides the same result.

Sorry about the last post. I just read inside of the entire pdf and found what you used for the Hickspodisc. You should put a step by step how to in the Articles section. I can kind of visualize what needs to be done to make it, but I'm still a little confused as to what materials are needed and exactly how to put it together. I'm one of the idiotic, visual type persons that needs a hand holding every so often to make sense of the world

Wouldn"t life be simpler if lens manufactures made their lens caps out of a material that had this function?

I just made a hickspodisc with some black posterboard and 2 coffee filters to fit in my Cokin P setup.

granted I don't have a reliable graycard, but I went and took some test shots to compare the levels in the histogram.

I went to a room lit by fluorescents, and shot and used a custom white balance, followed by AWB and then "fluorescent"

it seems that the whites were blown out pretty bad with the coffee filters, but the color temp seemed very close to the "fluorescent" which was not blown out. both of these were better than AWB, but not much (probably an easy lighting situation for the AWB)

any thoughts on the blown out highlights?

Brian

You will need at least three layers of filter materal. the respirator material is the best. N95 by 3m is made the same each time coffee filters are all different .

OK, is this the filter material no longer available at Home Depot?

How is it packaged? in sheets or rolls? (just curious)

go to your local Sherwin williams paint store and buy a pack of N95 filters from 3m , don't buy any other brand even if they say N95 they won't give you an accurate reading. they come 10 to a pack I believe.

If I may, Tom...

It works great. Just remember that to use the disk ( or any other CWB device ) with flash, the reference image used to set the CWB must be taken with flash. If I am using fill-flash as in the image below and at other times during the same shoot I am using no fill then I will shoot 2 reference images and flip back and forth between them depending on the lighting used.

Hickspodisk used to set CWB with fill flash:

Tom or anyone,

Could you please explain the easiest way to cut a circular pattern out of the light diffuser material? I was thinking razor knife, but not sure how difficult this will be. I have all of my materials in place except for the 77mm cutout of acrylic light lens.

Thanks,
Jim
