p.2 #1 · New 1D mk III (and my stupidity)

It was a typo, pointed out by HSellars above. It should have read "less noisy than the mk ii"...

So, I'd been going through the whole "7D or 1D mk III" dilemma. I predominantly shoot hockey, so I decided on the mk III, and picked up the new toy today. It had been back to Canon for the sub-mirror fix, so I figured I was safe.

However, I'd read so many horror stories about the AF issues that I decided to do some tests on the new body today. I dialled in the recommended sports settings (from FM and also the various Canon PDFs), and set the camera up exactly as it should have been.

I then stood at one side

Bought one that had the fixes, and it still had to go in 2 times for AF.

the mk III is a beaut! It's definitely less noisy than the mk III

Um, how is it less noisy than itself?

Your post was saying that more attention to detail would have avoided such problems. As in, having a shutter speed of 1/30.

Crikey, I really don't understand how can Colin possibly expect to accomplish any meritorious kind of avian photography at 1/30 sec shutter speed

p.2 #6 · New 1D mk III (and my stupidity)

So, to summarise, I've either just bought a complete POS or a great sports camera....!

I guess as with anything, some people love them and some people hate them. I've only had the mk III 3 days now, but from weekend tests, the AF & tracking seems extremely fast and accurate outdoors. I also had a test shoot at a hockey training game last night, and the results were excellent, although a little noisier than was anticipating at ISO 1600.

So, after my initial stupidity / lack of attention to detail(!), I'm happy with the new camera. From my limited tests, it's produced some nice results in the areas I need it to. Time will tell whether it's a worthy upgrade from my 1D mk II - opinion seems divided.

I too went through a long review period before buying 1D3 or 7D. They both had their strong, and weak, points. I bought the 1D3 first from Dave Kone here on FM. It had all the AF fixes and works like a charm. BIF that was impossible for me on a 50D became possible, and assured, with the 1D3. However, being focal length challenged with a 100-400 as my longest lens, I decided to test a 7D to see if it could replace the 1D3. Went through 3 versions of that camera before I could find one that AF'd reliably. Now that I have one that works, I can say that IN MY CASE, the 7D DOES give the 1D3 a run for it's money, but I have not yet come to the conclusion that it can REPLACE the 1D3.

The 1D3 AF's like a rocket, quick and dependable. The 7D is a just a teeny bit less quick and reliable. Had I gotten the 7D first, without ever using a 1-series, I would probably be perfectly happy, but there is definitely a reason the 1-series was created. For long-distance stills, the 7D comes out on top for the increased resolution, oh what detail it captures! Also, the 7D has the same control layout (for the most part) as my 5D2, so that in itself is extremely handy. Whenever I use the 1D3, I have to keep looking at the controls to make sure I change the correct thing. Yet, the handling and ergonomics of the 1D3 just "feels" better than the 7D with grip, for some reason the grip on the 7D juts out differently or something, so I usually shoot without it.

So, for now, I carry 2 camera bodies for my birding adventures while I continue to compare the two. If I had the money, I'd sell both and get a 1D4 as I believe that would give me the best of both worlds. Have also considered selling the 5D2 and 1D3 to get the 1D4, and keep the 7D as backup to the 1D4, but that's a much tougher decision since I am predominately a landscape photog and would really miss the full frame sensor.

What it comes down to is that it will ALWAYS be a matter of personal preference that each person will have to make for themselves based on what, and how, they shoot.

Tredders,
Thanks for sharing your story. It made me smile because it is exactly something I would do. (and similar to things I have done obviously). The bright side is the relief you feel after finding out you just had a case of the dreaded HUA.

It was a nice change of pace and well told.

+1, made me smile too! And, yes, it is exactly the kind of thing that I would do. Before shooting my last baseball game of the season, my wife sent me a text reminding me to check ALL of my settings twice before I started shooting. I've shared your experience more than once.

Just so you know, I owned the 7D and sold it because of poor tracking in low contrast situations (otherwise a great little camera) and bought a second Mark III in place of the 7D, and have never regretted it.

Thanks for putting a smile on my face with an entertaining story!

Dave
