p.2 #2 · New 1D mk III (and my stupidity) | |

So, I'd been going through the whole "7D or 1D mk III" dilemma. I predominantly shoot hockey, so I decided on the mk III, and picked up the new toy today. It had been back to Canon for the sub-mirror fix, so I figured I was safe.
However, I'd read so many horror stories about the AF issues that I decided to do some tests on the new body today. I dialled in the recommended sports settings (from FM and also the various Canon PDFs), and set the camera up exactly as it should have been.
I then stood at one side of the garden and got my 9 year old daughter to run the length of the garden, and then randomly around, whilst I tracked and shot pics of her with my trusty 70-200 f/2.8.
When I loaded the pics into PS, I was horrified. The vast majority were wildly out of focus, and looked terrible. When I checked, the focus point seemed to be in the right place, so it wasn't operator error, but to make sure that there was nothing wrong with the lens, I put it onto the 1D mk II and took a similar set of pics again at 1//500. This time, the trusty mk II gave a great result, with all but one pic nice & sharp.
I was distraught! Jeez, I'd obviously got one of the notorious junk 1D mk III's.... I was just about to repackage it and send it back for a refund when I looked at the LCD. Yep, the shutter speed was 1/30! I'd concentrated so much on the damned Custom Functions, that I'd accidentally changed the shutter speed right down and not noticed!
Of course, I then set the mk III at 1/500, and shot a sequence of 54 photos, and every one was tack sharp! What a moron!
I guess the moral of the story is: -
1. Don't get too hung up on the horror stories you read on the net. Yes, I'm sure some people had issues with the AF, but I'd pretty much convinced myself that I'd got that issue before the camera arrived, and without even thinking it could be down to my own stupidity.
2. No matter how 'good' or experienced you are, always check the obvious things first! I'm regularly published in National (and occasionally international) newspapers, but still made fool of myself today!
Anyway, now that I've actually managed to set it properly, the mk III is a beaut! It's definitely less noisy than the mk III, and I'm delighted with the 1000 or so photos I've taken with it today....Show more →
Bought one that had the fixes, and it still had to go in 2 times for AF.
