The 1D3 is perhaps the most criticized Canon ever, at least in the digital age, it was a debacle and did much to damage Canon's reputation in the eyes of professional sports shooters. Now it was probably saved in the final year of its product cycle by a last ditch effort by Canon.
With the AF debacle of this body, I'm actually stunned how many people recommend buying one used. It's basically playing Russian Roulette with your cash. Fortunately, I was able to acquire one from a trusted FM'r, and I know for certain the AF is sound (and it hasnt let me down yet). Hell, look at Rob Lynn - the poor guy bought what was purported to be a body with good AF, and he's had it back into Canon twice now?
That said there are some happy owners...
Of course.
Comes the new kid on the block: the 7D, in fact we might say that this is the 1.6x pro body that a lot of people were wishing for.
This is how I view the 7D as well. It is a professional-level crop.
Canon probably used this body to test some new ideas for its future mid-range AF-system. Full of the latest and greatest gimmicks from Canon.
I sure hope is makes its way into the 5D2's successor, as it really is a superb AF system.
Going from the 1D2's 45 point AF system, to the 7D's 19 point zone/point/spot-point AF system, the 1D3's feels seriously handicapped. The 7D's AF system, imo, is absolutely wonderful to use. Body orientation-linked AF points? How cool is that feature, let alone some of the others?!
The 7D and 1D3 are logical competitors in terms of pricing and usage (new vs used).
Agreed, which is why everyone seems to be comparing them.
Is it surprising that the 1D3 will not "blow away" the new kid, with its 3 years of development advantage especially in the light of the 7D's "covert" pro background?
Not at all, which is what gets me about people who show up in these types of threads on a war path to the denigrate the 7D, claiming the 1D3 is so much better, when that is so far from the truth. With the obvious build quality of the 1D3 aside, the performance differences are negligible and I think come down to preference, rather than any massive technical win by either body. For FL-limited shooting, the 7D is the *clear* winner, as the resolution advantage is massive. My point was/is that the "better camera" between these two is *not* night and day, and I clearly said that for *me* I just dont think the 1D3 is as great a camera as everyone seems to think it is, considering that unlike a 7D, you cannot buy one with warranty and your odds of ending up with one with a bummed AF system are a lot greater than that of a new 7D.
PS. if there is one thing I like about my 1D3 it is how similar the files are to my now replaced 5D, apart from the lower res that is.
Yes! I completely agree. That is one thing which I did notice about the 1D3 was the similarity in the files to those from my 5D. In the same breath, I have to agree that the lower res is just an absolute "lose" for me with the 1D3. For day-to-day stuff, its a non-start, but for any of my FL-limited work, well, enter my 7D... I just wish the 1D3 was the same res as my 5D. That would be just about a perfect balance point.
With all of this said though, I am considering selling my 7D/1D3 and nabbing a 1D4 when the prices drop under $4K. I would be ecstatic with a 1D4/5D combo.
