Curious if anyone has experience with both a rigid and v5 50 cron on an m9, I am looking to make the purchase and add a 2nd cron to my kit but am on the fence between these two. Which would some of you choose?

Sigh.. I really need a 21mm SEM. There's something very unique to the color and rendering and not discounting the skill of the operator. Beautiful images.

Just curious what M240 user experiences on this board are with the locking-up/freezing of the camera? I've heard it's nothing to do with what cards are used but simply the processor not quite being up to it? Even with latest firmware. Is this isolated or widespread ?

Leica DR Rigid 50 Cron all the way for me when using the M9, the rendering and glow w/this combo is awesome, def. one of the best lens to focus, the focus ring on 2 of my copies were simply user friendly and my keeper rate was higher

Now correct me If I am wrong, but to my understanding the close focus goggles of the DR do not work on the m6ttl and m9 due to the added height of the camera? And if this is true the close focus only works with an m240 with live view then? I understand about the need to modify the lens cam as to not damage the inner workings of a digital M, but if it's worth doing for use on an m9 and m6ttl then I would gladly consider the DR over the normal rigid.

Oh my! Thank you for the samples, and hopefully people will forgive your a7 shots ;o) given that they are with a classic Leica lens...

That was kind of what I thought, it was just "unprocessed" and would clean up better. The look of the tree root/trunk is exactly what I like...

TBH the 35/1.4 pre-asph seems like the lens to get based on your real-world results. I think I would probably just TRY the CV first, simply as it would save me around £1000 and give me sometime to earn back some money (don't really have anything I could sell/trade).

something else to consider that i forgot since i shoot the a7, mfd on the pre-asph is 1m while the cv has an mfd of .7m.

Ah yes, that is another good point. I know .7m can require a little thought so 1.0 meters might be interesting to work with...

I think it would be safe to say that the M240 will lock up at some point in time. Who really knows why... I have just accepted the fact that it will happen every now and again. However, it doesn't happen to me that frequently - especially with the latest FW installed.

Interesting, thanks Gary. A bit disappointing to learn of this of course but hopefully pretty infrequent / not the end of the world. Did the m9 suffer with "freezing" as well?

I have never had issues with my M-E. While it has the same sensor and things as the M9, it is a much newer generation than some of the older models.... dunno if that makes a hill of beans.

Anyway, here's a few from a barn today with the 50 Lux ASPH. This is a banana spider wrapping up lunch. Well, actually breakfast, lunch and dinner...

amazing detail - you can see the silk actually being spun here!

Buy one w/o goggles and use a 1.25x magnifier for M9, thats what I did, I wouldn't even mod a goggled version of anything personally, to many potential issues (and yes there will be issues if you look around)

Excellent shots everyone!

tophoto, regarding the 50 Cron Rigid DR, needs to be modified so it will fit in the M9/M240. The near cam needs to be milled, as it will interfere with the rear box, and you end up not having the Macro range coupled to the RF. The MFD is 0.46m with modification, and quality of the optics are just amazing. Having the MFD of 0.46m is great, as so many times I have been frustrated with 50mm just having 1.0m as the minimum.

This lens is a superb piece of engineering made from brass, and nothing has been spared. The DR is better suited to the M240 or cameras that have LV. My 50 Cron Rigid DR transitions smoothly for normal to macro with no need to activate it by pulling the focus ring forward after having been modified.

The 50 Cron Rigid without DR is made from aluminium, great lens and has a MFD of 1.0m, and is about 100gms lighter.

I had purchased two of Cron Rigid (Aluminium) lenses before, and had to re-calibrate to match the M240. With the DR, all the calibrations were 100% accurate, better toleranced. My understanding is when Leica originally made the DR, the specs were incredibly tight.

Richard, regarding the M240 lockups. I have only had a few and usually because I am impatient rather than waiting for the files to be written. This is usually just a battery removal and replacement. With the very latest FW, the lockups with respect to using the OVF have been greatly improved now.

The M9 I have had files jammed, and could not be written over, and ended up using a backup M9 for the rest of the shots on a day trip. The only way I resolved this was by disposing of the SD card, and using a newly formatted card. Mind you I did not lose the files up to the point of lockup.

Both cameras have improved dramatically with the latest FW's. The M240 is a great camera, 24MP and the ergonomics flow. It could be faster, yes.

Having LV and a 3" HR LCD is a must for me now, as I am tired of sending lenses like the 75 Lux/50 Nocti f/1.0 back for minor focusing re adjustments. Fantastic lenses, but their calibrations do drift over 12 months, just due to the weight on the flange alone. Usually it just a quick replacement of the shims on the flange to bring the calibrations back into spec.

Fantastic shots everyone! Sorry for not commenting individually. I'm currently on another vacation so have limited access to Internet

Regarding the lock ups, with the M9 I've had encountered at least 4-5 lock ups during the 18 months of ownership. The problem is that they occurred at really awkward moments. I think most lock ups happen when you're shooting continuously for a while so the camera electronics heat up. With the M240 I have yet to encounter a lock up, but that's because I never use LV and don't own an EVF. this said, it does happen that the camera becomes very sluggish in shooting and writing files. This is basically what causes the lock up when using the EVF. However, in this case, I wait for the camera to finish writing the files, then turn it off for a few seconds.

The M9 also destroyed a couple of cards, and I lost all the images as the cards became unreadable. With the M240 I lost one card so far, but the card was still readable and usable in other devices, but I threw it away nonetheless. Cards are cheap these days so why risk it.

Thanks Charles but also to everyone else who's commented on my queries... sorry to drag down the image-thread!

One question re: startup. If you leave it turned on and it "times out" (eg turns off after so many minutes), how long will it take to "wake" backup so you can start using it? I've heard 1-3 seconds for initial startup, depending on card, which is okay, but I would hope that this isn't the case when "waking up"? Not a huge concern though, as it seems they've put a rather great battery inside!

I might try contacting Leica to see if they have any official recommendations on this... not sure it'll make any difference though.

I am a slow shooter and haven't had much problems with lock ups so the theory that it mostly happens when shooting continuously makes sense, maybe a cooler and less humid climate also helps in keeping the electronics from running warm.

Lazy Sunday, the 35 Summilux at f/8 is such a gem.
